I use Mobil 1. Tried Redline and Royal Purple. Neither worked well for me in any of my vehicles. My friend is a manager at Oreilleys and told me that he went to some oil seminar and Mobil 1 is one of the few manufacturers that contains 100% virgin oil. Royal Purple is the worst cause they start with recycled to get the thinner viscosity.

I used to work for Pep Boys and Trak Auto and I've been to a lot of those seminars. You have to keep your bullshit detector set to "high" to make it through them.
You get some basic useful information, but 90% of it is marketing. It's not a class, it is a sales presentation designed to help you sell the products that your company carries.

Whether RP starts with recycled or not, I doubt it, but they are running Group-III hydrocracked mineral base. So is Mobil-1, ever since they lost the Castrol lawsuit. They have to in order to remain competitive.
The only pure Group-IV basestock Mobil-1 oils remaining are the 10w40 and 20w50 motorcycle oils (and their aviation products).

But... Royal Purple 20w50 in my motorcycle did not hold viscosity any better than Castrol GTX. Both sheared down to a 30wt within 2000 miles. M1 20w50 remained in grade, just barely edging down to a 40wt after 6000 miles, likewise for Amsoil MCV 20w50.

Redline and Schaffer are both good products, but not readily available OTC (which is why I never tested them in my bike).

Its funny how forums all differ in their opinions and will be biased towards products. On majority of the Subaru forums Mobile 1 is considered complete garbage and you would be better off using water, Yet they Praise Rotella T6 like it is some miraculous fluid. Same goes for Euro makes and "German Castrol".

I feel Redline, Royalpurple, and other generally expensive oils are a complete waste of money for these engines. Pick a brand change it regularly and stop obsessing about first world problems.

I can usually go to Napa and get their 5-30 synthetic oil that comes out of the exact same factory as Valvoline on sale for under 4$ a quart.

My '15 PreRunner Tacoma takes 5.5 qts. of oil. I use 59 of these at each oil change

So is it true under recent rule changes that a synthetic oil isn't truly a synthetic oil unless it says "Full Synthetic"?

Very few are actually "true" synthetics, Amsoil Signature Series, Royal Purple, and Redline are the only 3 left that I know of that are 100% PAO or ester based synthetics. Mobil 1, Pennzoil and Valvoline synthetics are all highly refined hydro-cracked conventional oils that are allowed to be marketed as full synthetics. We can thank Mobil 1 and Castrol for that coming to light, Mobil tried to sue Castrol for selling group 3 synthetic oils labeled full synthetics and Castrol won the battle so they all started doing it that way because it's cheaper.
I don't know a whole lot about it but if you really want to get into the subject head on over to Bob Is The Oil Guy and you will learn everything you ever wanted to know about motor oil, oil filters, and anything else automotive lubricant related.

Synthitic motor oils basically meet all car manufacturers requirements. It's gotten to the point that the rubber gaskets are having problems after 10 years of heat and age to keep oil from leaking out of the motor. Instead of the motor wearing out. I go for value, which is Walmart Synthitic Motor oil $17.50.
