i have about 10 years till I retire and have been wondering where to live.
I live in NY now because I work in NYC
I lived in Southern California and loved it .I would like about an acre or so of property and hopefully lake front. So I may consider NC.
So these are my Hobbies and why I have a Taco
    1 Dogs come first
    2 Fishing - Scuba diving
    3 Camping - hiking
I don't want to live in The north east -too cold or Fla too Hot- humid. I have about 800k in equity in my home now so I'm not looking for a bungalow but also not a Ocean front mansion

Ideally - lake house with an acre property -nice weather - quiet neighborhood

North Georgia around Lake Burton is really nice.

Northern Idaho and Washington have some great options. May not be an acre of lake front land but definitely dog and fishing oriented. Have the puget sound for fishing and scuba diving, san juan islands, plus nothing but tons of area to go camping and hiking. Check out wta.org for all the Washington hikes.

He might not like the weather up here... WA is drop dead gorgeous during summer, but if he loved So Cal, it may be a bit much rest of the year.

True true. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else than the PNW during summer.. but for winters its a cheap flight to SoCal for a warm week/weekend. The rain does get to me but if you like skiing/snowboarding or being in the mountains its a great place.

The rain and the gray. Lived here my whole life but I swear sometimes in winter it looks like Russia looks in movies.

I went to Oregon during the rainy season. That sucked. I couldn't take that.

Looks like I'm gonna have to get a nice camper and start doing serious road trips
    Northern California is one consideration
I am going to have a pretty nice pension to help with the taxes.

Research lake Keowee and lake joccassee in upstate South Carolina. Everything you mentioned including scuba diving an under water city in crystal
Clear water. The lakes have waterfalls and excellent fishing as well.

How do you feel about snow 8 months of the year? And 90* one day, 50* the next?

Texas, if you can stand the heat, is definitely on the upswing. They have low cost of living and like 8 of the top 20 fastest growing cities in the country. Not much hiking in the mountains though :D

I lived in Florida. I had a home on the water front. Storm came in and wiped out the whole town. So we will not be neighbors my friend

Take a look at Lake Tellico in Tennessee. Beautiful lake, great land, and nice weather year round.

Not too much a fan of snow after shoveling the driveway every winter. A few months I can handle. Not 8.

Lake Oconee in north Georgia's nice.
Sucks down here in South Georgia for the heat and humidity during the summer, but the winters are great though, no snow and mild weather. For 800k, down here, you can buy 100 acres, build a helluva nice house, and build your own lake. Every hunter from Florida has a private hunting plantation in South Georgia.
