Best tire for a mostly on-road taco?

    None (yet)
The oem tires (245/75/16) on my SR5 are starting to show a fair amount of edge wear, so I'm looking to preemptively replace them in the next few months.

The most off-road driving I do is through scout camps (so, mixed gravel and dirt for the most part), but that's maybe 5% of all my driving.

My main concerns are fuel economy and road noise as I take a few long-distance trips (mostly highway) each year.

    Any good general recommendations?

The Defender LTX m+s came on my truck when I bought it used, tires in new condition. Very impressed with them. I drive 12 miles of dirt and gravel every time I leave my neighborhood. They're pretty good in snow and icy conditions too. I want to go to a DuraTrac for second wheel set, but I'm afraid I'll be let down.

Though not offered in your stock size I would recommend just taking a quick look at the Nokian Rotiiva A/T if you would consider going up a size. Light weight, 3 peak mountain snow flake rated, low rolling resistance and are reinforced with a material similar to kevlar. I've had them for over 10k miles and they are great in snow and ice. No reduction in fuel economy even though I went up a size. They are actually only weigh about a pound more than what came stock on my truck. I'm going against the grain here but I think the Michelin LTX is just okay in my opinion. They last a long time and give decent ride and fuel economy but the couple F150s I have driven at work that have them break loose too easy for my taste on dry pavement and not the best when its wet outside. Again I'm limited to only driving them at work and it's only my opinion and not looking to fight over it.

Love my duratracs, but they're definitely not HT tires. Would not recommend to OP. Don't balance well, and quiet when new, but getting a little loud now that they're half worn. I'll will buy them again though if I get AT's. Good offroad, great in our wet snow, not so great on ice, but what is? They seem to be "really good" in anything nasty and and last long enough. The all rounder of aggressive tires.

For a mostly street truck, those michelins would be high on my list if I put a lot of miles on it per year.

I don't think Michelin is ever a bad choice. But it ain't the only choice. There are other, less expensive options that you would probably be just as happy with. It's mostly personal preference and there are lots of options. The thing I like about Best Tire Brands | Shop Tires By Brand | Discount Tire is that you can shop for a lot of tires online and easily compare prices.

I'll second the Nokian Rotiiva A/Ts. Super quiet, awesome in ice/snow and very reasonably priced. I wouldn't put Duratracs on anything ever again.

I would also say they are reasonably priced. I think I got mine for around $140 a tire.

The Firestone Destination Le3 are a great HT tire. I have the Le2 on my 2000 Prerunner and do mostly highway miles on my commute, there're very quiet and do great in the rain against hydroplaning on the roads.

Another vote for the Michelin Defender LTX M/S—this came on my truck when I bought it four years and 50,000 miles ago and they just won't quit.

Zero flats, leaks and a surprising amount of tread left. Good traction in snow and mud, but also a great highway tire. Validating to hear others support them as well. Before I would just buy whatever was cheapest at Walmart but now I really see the advantage to buying quality tires.
