For the record, I used Goo Gone before and it didn’t really do much. Don’t recommend it for this application

Do you live in a hurricane or tornado prone area? That's the only reason the previous owner could justify that amount of glue. :annoyed:

I know the 1st gen Tundras had a small strip of low tack adhesive tape just inside the rubber seal at the top of the flares, but no glue would remain when they were removed. No sure why someone would think they needed that much glue.

Maybe it's my display, I don't see any adhesive - just dirt and dust buildup.

When I pulled my flares, looked just as bad. Quick wash and wax fixed that immediately. Don't recall any adhesive on the flares at all (other than the double sided tape on the rubber trim piece).

    IMG_20190226_185058.jpg

OP, maybe start with a small amount of bug/tar remover or polishing compound. You're behind the flare so not in a visible area unless you plan on leaving them off. Small amount to test.

i have adhesives on my engine rails I am trying to remove, they have been there since the start and only recently exposed
the Goo Gone stuff would probably not be effective for that either (adhesive on painted metal)
I am trying WD40 and soft cloth but its not completely removing yet

this has worked well for me in various applications. I used it to remove the faded off road decals on my truck, adhesive from the double sided tape after my rain guards broke, it pulled the pinstirping off of my truck, ... it'll get some junk off of the paint. Might have to come back and buff the area a bit to make it shine again but it shouldn't bother your paint unless you just sit there forever and burn through the clear, but I haven't had that issue in the past.

I really don't like goo gone very much. Its super popular but really isn't very powerful. One guy mentions 'Goof Off' and I can tell you that it is some really good stuff. Its a little expensive per ounce but has worked well for me in the past for dissolving adhesives. I also have had good luck with WD-40 removing some sticky stuff (maybe coke?) that someone got all over my truck driving down the interstate.

You can also use WD40 and or rubbing alcohol depending on how thick that is. My go to is WD40 and cleanup with rubbing alcohol. Two things that everyone should have around their house. No need for anything fancy.

i tried the WD40 on my situation, its a no no go,

trying this goof off and the TRICK is to wipe in one motion, not back and forth and do not rewipe without folding rag to unused surface
it will likely take multiple apps with Q-Tip for the crevices and repeat the process

Did you let it soak or penetrate? Some applications takes a few sprays/wipes.

Agreed. Mine was clean, just paint. Many guys remove their flares & I have never seen anything like that & is why I was curious about all that adhesive.

Adhesive doesn't make sense anyway since the flares are hollow. Maybe it's just built up nasty road grime?

it is caked on there pretty good!
wd40 seemed to evaporate a little but might finish the job with a wd40 spray on the rails
so far the goof off is making them shine black after all adhesive is removed to metal
pic of what I have been trying to remove...
(pic is from a few months ago with the heaviest before wd40 attempts)

I would have tried WD-40, but if you already got it.... never mind...

Ok. Is it a dirt build up? I thought it was some type of left over adhesive.

Have you tried a degreaser for that instead like Purple Power or Simple Green. If you have a steam cleaner that might help lift the build up too. Use a toothbrush or a plastic auto brush and some elbow grease:)

yes, there was quite a bit of dust turned to dirt build up on the outer edge of the rubber stripping crevice (2+ decades worth) there was a fairly tight seal to the edges of the hood where the outside elements would not get into the compartment from the topside
i first scrubbed it with soap/water/rag to start to remove any dirt that would come loose
it was coming off fairly well yesterday, just going to be a longer process for the deepest cleaning lol
