    I haven't read the whole thread yet; but, the problem as I see it was...

    You created a barrier with the towel by spreading it out so close to the edges of the oven. It apparently got very hot beneath the towel and not very hot above; which is the reason it wasn't working.

    Dayum! May as well bite the bullet and buy the pro headlights.

    I admire your dedication, sir. May want to replace the over as all that plastic burning probably put a nice chemical bath all over your oven.
