forgive my ignorance but iirc, is it not wise to perform the bhlm "completely", which is to say, blacking out the bowls as well as generally the entire headlight units while keeping the OEM bulbs, unless one does a full retrofit. why is that? i like the look of "cowboyz" lighting setup and was curious. any and all input appreciated :D

Unless you do a retrofit, the stock setup requires the reflector bowl to reflect light forward. You can eliminate the need for the reflector bowl by using projectors. Projectors are self contained unit and have their own reflectors built in, allowing you to paint everything in the stock headlight.

In short, if you want that look, you need projectors... There also happens to be a group buy in the works as we speak!

Cool, i understand. wouldn't have guessed the projectors had that much greater "reflection" than the oem setup given their size compared to the oem bowl and all. perhaps that is why so many members admire them. i drive nights often, albeit encountering little traffic, but deer are always a concern, and am strongly considering this mod next. thanks Pugga.......

Projectors are sort of a reflector/projector setup with incredibly bright HID bulbs (high intensity discharge). They have a curved glass lens on it that magnify the light and get that really wide pattern and a metal cutoff so the light is only put where you want it, between the horizontal and the ground. From there, there are a lot of things that play into how the projectors function, clear lenses, size of the projector, quality of the bulbs, wattage of the ballasts, etc. If you have the interest, check out the group buy:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/group-buys/240416-round-10-hid-projector-retrofit-group-buy.html

I've also been doing a lot of research on HID Planet. Those guys generally mess with projectors a lot more than most of us do, but the knowledge and reviews are generally very helpful.
