Have my 4x4, but do they require you to really have chains (do they check) on board still?

I am a Prerunner and I tell them they are in my toolbox and i dont want to hold up the line to get them out, but they can check if they want. Never been asked in the past 20 times. If its icy i still see tons of 4x4's chaining up tho, so it might be good to bring anyway.

They do have caltrans and CHP @ a stop sign checking car by car.

Yeah, I just bought some for my new 2011 4x4 Sport Pkg Taco. I checked the CHP website, and they do specifically say that if "chains are required", you need them....4x4 or not. Now, I just need to determine if I can actually USE these chains on the rear, despite the owners manual telling me to use cables, not chains.

I'm headed up Saturday. I have stock size chains but not the size for my big tires. They won't know right?

Not sure about Big Bear but I went up to China Peak last weekend. They just asked me if I had a 4x4, I said yes, then they asked if I had chains/cables with me I said yes (which was a lie) and they didn't ask to see the chains, just said have a nice day.
As I was passing the check point I saw an X-Runner putting on the chains, felt sorry for the guy, because the next couple of miles was still asphalt and no snow on the road. There really was no need for chains for at least the next 15 miles or so.

Last year they made you install them before you passed the check point, oh yeah if you have a garage test fit them tonight. Much easier than on the side of the mountain while getting rained on ( it will be raining where you have to put them on more than likely). Some time they just ask though so 4x4 should be fine. Have fun.

Yep, that was last year during the big dump before they closed the roads down. We had to go home on the back side 2 days later due to closures. Now like others have said they could easily just ask. And on a side note I have MT's and still was required to install chains.
