Can you fit a tire bigger than OEM in the original spare tire 'spot'? I like to be prepared. Looking at going to a 265/75/16 tire size on my truck. Just trying to think ahead. Thanks

I haven't tried anything other than factory but i'm pretty sure a 265/75/16 will fit... it's not much bigger at all...

theres a few threads that have posted that if you cut the support brackets off you can get a 285 under there.

I can fit that size under my bed without the tow hitch package, but chose to mount it in the bed instead for easy access when offroad...

    Touché Mr.OZ

The last time I was in mud I broke the bead on the old ride. Under the bed spare would not lower due to the caking of the mud. Needless to say I have 2 days worth of cleaning inside my truck to do.....no fun

My spare is 265/70 17. Fits up there no problem at all. And I do have the tow hitch.

^^this. did this before i had my tire carrier. the 2 support brackets to be cut are pretty obvious when you drop the spare.

I have my 255/80/17 under the bed cause I'm too poor to buy a tire carrier for now. It fits, kinda. I hacked the support brackets, but the tire hits the leaf spring shackle on the driver side and rubs against the heat shield of the exhaust on the passenger side. If I angle the tire a bit (up more on passenger side, lower on driver side) it fits a bit better.

it was close, but yes. never saw any burn/melting marks on the rubber before the exhaust was chopped.

I don't do the whole mud thing anymore. Too much work and I work too hard for the stuff I have to do that. No offense to any 'mudders' just my opinion.

Thanks for all the info guys. I figured there would be a little clearance around the tire but I wasn't sure.

Ive seen 285's underneath. I've had a 265 underneath, but I didnt have a tow package. The 285 is super close to the exhaust though.

To the OP, I've got a 265/75-16 with the OEM tow package and have done no modifications to my truck to make it fit.

I plan on building a rail system based spare tire mount for the summer if/when I go to the beach, as I had a minor incident in my old Toyota in which my back bumper was on the sand due to a well-meaning, if not educated in manual hubs friend.

I've put a 265/75/16 under there without any modifications, and it didn't burn or rub from the exhaust.
