Earlier this year I added this Undercover One Piece ABS tonneau. It's a great cover but I hadn't realized they don't want people putting bike racks on it. I will void the warranty but decided to give it a shot anyway with strategic use of rubber to dampen and spread the impact from the rack. See the open pic showing the right inside. Planning on developing a method to mount racks along those.

Anyone put a bike rack on an ABS cover? Would love to see pictures and find out how well it works.

Here's a some snapshots in my "racks seen" gallery of someone parked near me a few years ago who's done almost exactly what you're thinking of, @brightondale.

These might be fiberglass tonneaus, however, not ABS. I'd expect that if you mount your tracks with good backing (like a plate, not just washers) and manage your loads to the "light" side you should be fine.

And here's a creative home-built rack seen on a truck in the Netherlands a few years back.

My Gen 2 (and Gen 1 before the one with the canopy) has racks on its Mountain Top aluminum checkerplate tonneau. Not ABS or even fiberglass, but these images might give you some ideas. I'm considering some upgrades to the (OE) Perrycraft Dynasport rails onto which are mounted Thule crossbars, and I'll probably use Front Runner stuff.

Here's that tonneau when it was on my previous Gen 1 (it was a Gen 1 tonneau originally that I modified to fit my Gen 2).

Here's the Front Runner universal track kit mine may get in the future. Other companies sell similar stuff, but I like Front Runner. These tracks are compatible with Front Runner and other companies foot kits (as far as I can tell).

Wow major thanks for digging up these pictures and writing this up. This gives me a lot to go off of. I liked the black Tacoma but not the Z71. Still interesting to see what he did. Too bad we can't see the backside of both but they both do look stable.

Your cover looks very similar to the new Undercover Ridgelander all aluminum cover. I would have gotten one had I known. They are almost double in price but look worth it.

Off-the-side is nice, @Unchained 5150. I might have gone that way so I could travel with both rooftop tent and bike, but the way my tonneau is mounted there's no longer access to the c-channels inside the bed.

The Undercover Ridgelander is a neat cover fershure, @brightondale. Note that it has built-in T-track slots in the extrusions, so the perimeter is all set for mounting rack feet. BUT... Undercover told me (after several discussions) that it they don't sell it as an application for Gen 2 trucks. Only Gen 3.

I'm not sure I completely believe that, as almost all of the SMC inner bed is interchangeable between the generations. As I'm almost local to them, I asked a year or more ago if they'd help resolve the question if I brought my truck by for a test fitting -- and sale if it fit. Nope. They weren't interested.

Perhaps things have changed? Did you confirm a Ridgelander aluminum tonneau would fit on a Gen 2?

Actually no the Ridgelander is not available for Tacoma but I should have clarified I meant I would have gotten one like yours had I known.

That Mountain Top cover on my Tacoma is a bit of a unicorn. The Danish parent company (who makes this style and several other kinds) had US production for a time in the mid-2000s. They made a Gen 1 Tacoma cover back then, and after a few years of hunting I found one around 2010. One would have to be supremely lucky to find one nowadays.

Mountain Top recently re-started production in the US after an absence of fifteen or more years, making roll-up metal tonneaux for OEM applications. Nuthin' for our Tacomas, though.
