I will be replacing my leaf springs with a General Spring HD leaf pack. It says lift is ~2" with some reporting slightly more. The question is should I be buying 5100's or 5125's to with the LP? Is there a downside to going with 5125's if it settles to 2" or less (translation if the shock offers more travel than needed does it compromise the ride at all)?

    Thanks guys!

Bump......I've read about 50 other threads and none of them really give a definitive answer either way. There has to be thousands of you out there with a 2-2.5" rear lift. What are you running and are you having any issues?

the 5100 and the 5125 are the exact same shock, just that the 5125 comes in more lengths

it all depends on the length that you get. DSM sells an extended 5100 for 2-3" lifts, or you could call them about ordering the correct length 5125

The b110 5100 is the extended shock. I found them cheapest from wheelers offroad

It's 3 to 4. My bad I didn't see you were going for 2 inches

The response I received was that without knowing the measurements of suspension travel from the spring manufacturer (full compression and extension) that they couldn't really say for sure which shock to use. Based on lift alone, the recommendation was for a 5125 which is for 2-2.5". The problem is the lift seems to vary with each install. Some get 2", some get 2.5", some settle over time. I called General Spring and I might as well have spent my time smashing my johnson rod repeatedly in a door jamb. If I have this right, and the shock is too long, the shock will not be able to compress enough with the suspension and will bottom out before the bumpstop, so then you need to modify or replace the bumpstops. WTF! I just want to throw some shocks on my stupid LP's.

If you know for sure you are at 2" then the 5100 should be fine.......from what I am finding on TW.

I don't really wheel that much and when I do it's light however I do tow frequently with a 4,000lb trailer where small bumps become big and can really flex the rear suspension. So more than anything I just want to avoid problems.

In my opinion, which obviously everyone on here views things differently, i think you would be okay with the 5100s because there made for 2 inches of lift and I'd imagine there is still room in the shock to flex it out so I think you would be okay with just 5100s. You can always get superbumps and I think you can add washers to make them taller to tune it correctly. That's just my .02 cents.

There's a thread somewhere here on TW on General Spring and the guys who posted feedback are running stock shocks so you may be right. It does appear that the lift runs closer to 2.5" than 2". I'd feel better with a measurement or a measurement from someone else with this setup.
