Sure, I get it. Not sure the diff between the board and receiver sticking up permanently is that much worse than 4 clevis pins sticking up permanently, though. In either case, you're hosed if you want to lay out something large and flat like plywood or sheetrock.

The biggest thing I haul is this little 8' sailboat I stuff into the bed sometimes. (Tailgate has to remain down) I don't think the mount will interfere with that. (Winch has to go, obviously) Some nice lazy afternoon this summer when I take my daughter sailing, I'll take a pick of it in there.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I ordered a front hitch from CBI. I also ordered a Trail Rider Rear Bumper. My M8000 came in today from Amazon. No tax, free shipping, $80 rebate- they are giving them away! Can't wait to get it all put on. Thanks BJMoose for blazing this trail. I may tweak the idea a bit, but I think this is the perfect setup. It seems all the times I have really have messed up in a 4x4-- going forward was an undesirable or impossible option (cliffs). I really think having the option of placing a winch on the front or the back of the vehicle is the way to go regardless of the cost. Wonder why more people don't go this route?

So have you ever used the winch?

On our trip to slickrock trail, I hooked it up via a snatchblock to try and pull a Lexus forward over some boulders. Didn't work because the tree we attached the snatchblock to wasn't strong enough and started to deflect.

But the winch was loaded up to pretty much max capacity.

You can't see my truck, because I'm behind the guy I'm trying to winch forward.

A little later, I tried to winch myself over the same obstacle - but it was a rotten line, and winching forward got worse stuck. Ended up using hi lift to jack up, pile rocks under wheels, back out, and take a different line.

All this time I've been trying to find a good way to mount my fire extinguisher. I carry a 10lb extinguisher and auto mounts exist only for the 2.5lb extinguishers.

You always want to secure the extinguisher, so it doesn't become a 20lb missile in a crash or panic stop.

So - inevitably, it's somewhere way forward in the bed - not ready to hand if there were to be an emergency.

Today - this thought occurred to me; as you can see - it's both easily accessible and securely held in place by the winch line.

To free the extinguisher, all I have to do is flip the "free-spin-clutch-lever" on the winch, the tension on the winch line eases, and I can pull out the extinguisher.

I did think of that. The best thing would be one of those brackets with spring steel retaining strap and release lever. But no one makes them for the larger extinguishers that I can find.

If I end up being happy with it there, maybe I can put a descriptive label on or something.

Odds are - only folks I'm traveling with know it's there, and I can just show 'em ahead of time.

I'm now thinking of stripping all this gear off and mounting a permanent winch front bumper.

For the first three years I had the truck, I liked keeping the clean factory look. But now that I've mounted a high clearance rear bumper with tire carrier - the truck's kinda embraced the off-road look and I'm getting a little tired of having the winch mounted in the bed. It's takes up bed space there and I have to move it to the front when I'm gonna use it.

So, PM me if you're interested in making me an offer on all these parts - winch carrier, front receiver, power cables and connectors, etc... (but not the winch itself)

    EDIT - sold.

@DoorDing - I'm planning on going this portable winch cradle mount direction. My question on your idea: How do I go about "capturing" the nut on the backing plate below the bed? Thanks.

bjmoose - was the 20' cable long enough? I'm getting ready to order the rear power cable, but Warn offers a 24' cable as well.

20' was long enough for my regular cab. For double cab you probably want the extra length.
