alittle old school tip i can pass along...

back in the day when i restored cars, the arm rests, cluster trim, etc were always chrome plated. to save money and speed up time at the chromer we cleaned up all parts to be re-chromed. What I found to work (but takes alittle time, but cleans all the chrome off of plastic) soak the chrome pieces in a bucket of water with powdered TIDE...the laundry detergent. I dont recall the ratio< but i know we used alot of the powdered soap in a 5 gallon bucket. It worked great back then and it still should work great now

No fogging. Used the recommended sealant to seal around the seam after putting it back together.

I had a bad experience with silicone on my truck with another issue. I had leaks around the back window, so i shot clear silicone into the crack. It worked, however I have never been able to get all of the excess off of my paint! so...

The op says to use electrical tape to ensure no moisture gets in. Is this instead of adding additional silicone? I assume you reassemble without getting them to click back together, put them in the oven to melt original sealant, then squeeze them til they latch together. At that point put the screws back in, and then tape up the connecting edge. Is this correct...most places I have read say use silicone, but i would rather use tape, since it should not be as messy!!

As long as you aren't in a hurry, you can use the silicone. Just put it on one side at a time, let it dry and you will be fine. I thought about using tape, but the sides of the light aren't even close to flat... wasn't sure how good a seal I'd get.

Electrical tape just covers up the messy silicone. Use rubber butyl. It is less of a mess and cures much faster. That what I used.

I just used some bathroom silicone - starts out white, dries clear.

I figured if it can keep the shower water out of cracks, it'll do just fine on a set of headlights.
