I drove through a questionably deep "lake" (read puddle) today. My engine is hydrolocked so I'm gonna buy a jdm engine. My 4Runner is a 1997 my question is will any engine from a 1996-2002 4Runner work?

It actually wasn't too deep. The splash got sucked in through the "cold air intake" the previous owner install. Immediately hydrolocked my 1 week old, new to me ride

I tried cranking the engine by hand. It moves with a 2' breaker bar with the spark plugs pulled but it hits a dead stop. Probably a bent valve I'm thinking

6 days to be exact. They claim the engine I'm about to buy has 40,000 miles so if that's true then it's an upgrade lol. Was stuck in that puddle for about 20-30 minutes

    secret stuff.
Personally, I'm not convinced you trashed the motor. I hydro locked my First Gen 22RE. Pulled the plugs, shot out the water, put em back in and drove it another 3 years until I traded it in. Pull the head and see what's up, you got nothing to lose at this point...

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
The engine it self will work but you may have to swap over a lot of the electronics from yours to the new one. assuming its a v6 5vz-fe.

I bought the new engine, but I'm still gonna tear into the old one and try to get it going again just to have a spare. The 4Runner is going to be mostly a trail queen. And my girlfriend drives it to work when it snows. So I'm sure having a spare wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I have swapped a late 3.4 into a 98 4runner and I just swapped the whole intake over. ECUs were different too.

No I did not. But depending on if the "new" motor came out of a t100 or 2wd you may have to. It will be obvious as soon as you have both motors out of the truck.

I have done a few 3.4 swaps in 3.0 trucks, so i have swapped 3.4 pans before. So if you end up doing it, just get some Right Stuff in the cheese wiz can and use it. I have not had a leak yet.

That really sucks man, sorry to hear that. I never go through mud/water puddles fast for this reason. I was out offroading a couple weeks ago in the rain with a few friends, one of them went through a big mud pit and it splashed through a hole in his fender liner that he had cut to make room for his tires. Soaked his air filter and stalled his engine, he got real lucky the air filter caught most of the water and stalled before any real damage was done. We towed him out, removed the filter and it started up.

Those "cold" air intakes aren't worth the money for a lot of reasons, this being one of them. Hope you can find a good motor for cheap
