I don't think it matters what trails..... it's whatever 'torque' is applied to the axle that gets transferred into the blocks and what that can do over time.

If you have blocks already - Just crawl under your truck and inspect them from time to time. Especially - look for cracks starting to form and make sure your u-bolts are tight.

mjp: I just got done reading your thread over at TTORA about your truck build. all i have to say is "wow''. I knew you were turning your truck into a baja truck but i had no idea what all that included until i read that thread. I have two questions. you said you were just chilling in traffic when the idea hit you. how the hell does that happen? i can see sitting in traffic going "you know what, i want a brush guard" but how do you go "you know what, i want to completely change every aspect of my truck so that it is a badass winnin machine." seriously, how do you make that decision?

secondly, i dont mean to pry into other people's personal business, but what is a rough estimate of the cost for this? 20 grand, 15k, 30k? i just ask out of pure curiosity and if you dont want to answer thats cool, just ignore that question. i have to say your truck looks amazing. cool to see someone get an idea then run with it like you did.

For anyone interested in checking it out, i would DEFINATELY recomend reading this thread....

    Thanks ndcouch! :D

I'll blame severe ADD for some of my actions. :p Back in 2005 I was sitting in traffic on my way to work and realized that I didn't like my job, didn't like where I lived, and generally didn't like the boring direction my life had taken. The result was that I quit my job, sold my house, bought a new motorcycle, and spent a month riding it around the country. My timing with the buy/sell was pretty good so that gave me options. When I got back I couched it with family, bought the Tacoma, and spent my days rock climbing and on the beach. That lasted for several months until I got drunk at a Christmas party and mistakenly accepted a job.

I've been at this place for awhile and get stir-crazy sitting at a desk. So, sitting in traffic, I found I had the same itch but this time around I actually like my job. I had to figure out something reasonably unreasonable that I could do on the side and the Baja 1000 popped into my head. It's all-in during the race itself, but I can keep my job and just use lots and lots of vacation time.

As for cost...I won't post that publicly but my family thinks I'm insane. The entry fee alone was $3500 for the 2007 race. Even if I win, the prize money won't cover gas. It's all for the experience, and that alone is worth it to me. In the long run I won't remember spending the money, but I will remember blasting through the Mexican desert for 1000 miles in the hopes of accomplishing the improbable. (nothing is impossible ;))

I was having the same question. I keep about 300 lbs of gear in the bed plus a Leer shell. It sags and I need 2.5-3 inches. I probably hit trails 5 or 6 times a year for camping and whatnot. Block it or AAL? Eventually I'll get OME rear end. Apparently the front end was changed out for a tundra suspension. So it's already 3 inches higher than normal.

Wow I barely remember this thread!

Skip the middleman and go straight to where you ultimately want to be with your suspension. If you know you want OME, you'll save a ton of money by getting it instead of some interim solution.

It's a rare case where good actually does equal cheap in the long run. Do it once and do it right.

Gah I just necrobumped because I didn't check post timestamps.

Sometimes my only purpose in life is to serve as a warning for others. Don't be like me...

Someone liked a post in here so it popped up in my alerts, I saw an unanswered question, and I made an example of myself. Totally gonna have to ban myself now...
