I'd love some opinions on what this oil/grime build-up could be from?

My CV boots look fine. There's a small tear in the underside of the steering rack boot, but to my untrained eye it does not seem like that's the cause. There's a nice layer of oily grime on the coil and shock body, as well as the surrounding parts. Any thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Based on the pattern it looks like the grime has blown in from in front of the shock, so I don't think its from a leak in the shock. Probably just road grime, or something blowing back from the engine compartment. Might check for a leaking oil cooler line up front or something else around the engine.

I see. The rear facing portion of the shock wasn't as dirty, too. Thank you for your input!

    Stuff and junk and things...

It's road grime. Wash out the wheel wells from time to time.

PM me when you're ready for a rebuild.

Just FYI, you can't blow a coil over. You can blow a shock, but not a spring. Coil overs are adjustable. But to answer your question, that's just road grime/debris. When a shock goes, it's very noticeable. The ride is altered and will "bounce".
