Ok... so I've recently decided that I'm going to be a healthier person. I wouldn't describe myself as fat, but if you were to try to point my out in a crowd you'd probably use words like, "that big guy" or "the heavy-set one."

So one of the things I've discovered is the Body Mass Index, or BMI, which is "a statistical measurement which compares a person's weight and height. Though it doesn't actually measure a person's body fat %, it is a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight based on a person's height and weight." (Wikipedia)

Using any one of a number of online calculators, you can get your own BMI that will help you determine if you fall into one of four categories: Obese, Overweight, Normal, Underweight.

I'm curious (and maybe trying to make myself feel better) about how the folks on TW fall in the BMI table. Using this calculator and the anonymous poll above, tell us what your BMI is and we'll see how TW shakes out.

Regardless of how you feel about what the BMI says, put your actual results in the poll... then feel free to bitch about it below!

BMI is bullshit. its doesnt take into account body types. according to the BMI, i am 30-34.99 (Obese Class 1), but it cant tell that i am very stocky and have a large, dense bone and muscle structure. (how many obese people do you know that can bench 325?)

I'm on the VERY low end of normal weight- 18.6 or so.

I've been lower- Basic training took me down to about 2.6% body fat and a BMI under 14.

BMI is helpful, but using % body fat, VO2Max, Blood Pressure, etc helps get far more specific.

Good on you for trying to make a change-

See... that's what I'm talking about. I'm 5'11", which means I have to get down to 179lbs to be in the "normal" category. I think the last time I weighed that was in MIDDLE SCHOOL!

I've told a couple of people this, and it's the truth... My goal for now is to be overweight. Once I'm there, I'll shoot for normal, but I know it is unlikely to happen.

    Thanks!

I'm certainly not looking at BMI as my only indicator, but it's an interesting (and motivating) one that I've come accross. I'm a turbo-nerd and am tracking all sorts of things through this process: weight, BMI, resting heart rate, cholesterol, mile time, etc.

dont believe the bmi index, its friggin garbage! according to my bmi i am obese/overweight (6'5'', 225lbs) and i am not overweight! it does not take into account the basic of your body (i.e. your body's frame size, bone structure, muscle mass, etc etc).

I am about 33 BMI now, but was nearly 58 when I was 390 lbs. I lost 170 lbs and settled out at 225 lbs. I have not run the numbers lately.

muscle weighs more than fat...so just putting your weight isn't going to get you an accurate BMI reading

For some reason I just cracked up serious on that one! LOL!

I'm 5'9 and weigh 199. no idea what my BMI is. All that really matters to me is I can pull things up stairs my 28 year old son his college buddies call "superman" can't budge. Sometimes numbers lie.

No better proof that the BMI isn't a great index than this thread... plenty of pictures of perfectly healthy-looking guys that BMI calls overweight or obese.

While I am tracking my BMI (mostly b/c a quick Excel formula can calulate it), I'm certainly not going to use it as my only indicator of success. Like I've said before, I'm keeping up with a lot of things, but most importantly I'm going to be paying attention to how I feel, how I look, and how my pants fit!

BMI is a ton of horseshit. I got like a 28 or 29 I think as a BMI. Doesn't take into account muscle or build or any of that.
