I say go with an OME setup then if you need to get everything done soon. I believe the 882 coils and OME shocks with the arb bumper up front would work well. For the rear the Dakar leaf springs with the add a leaf you can get for the leaf pack as well as OME rear shocks would be a good setup. Box Rocket runs this setup and he uses his truck as an expedition rig with the bed usually full of gear. Here's a link to his build thread

Your best option may be a full OME kit w/ dakar leafs then

OME 880's, Wheeler's Offroad 5-Leaf pack. Bilstein 5100's, 1" Daystar shackles, Deck Plate Mod.
Get the wheelers 5-leaf pack. I believe it's perfect for your application. also install a set of timbrens in the rear for when you've got all that weight. Don't mess around with airbags.

OME 882s, OME shocks all around and OME Dakar spring packs, ARB, Warn 8000, ARE shell, Custom rear bumper w/ reciever, 5-235/80R17 Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX on FJ wheels, grey wire mod, Hi-Lift, Hellas, Red-Line hood lifters, Scion radio, sliders, Safari snorkel & LED Ditch lights on CBI mounts.
On my DD - I have the full OME kit on my 01 double cab (w/ camper shell & ARB front bumper w/ warn 8k winch & steel cable) for the last 8 months. Rides well, offroads fine, and adds minimal lift.
You will want the 882 up front and the Dakar pack works fine. HOWEVER, with stock shackles and a load in the rear (over 500lbs) there is some squatting. Remember this is a compact truck not a 3/4 ton! I am planning to offset this sagging with longer shackles as soon as the weather allows.
    Just my .02.

I just lived in Australia for 6 months. They have ARB stores down there, which I visited, and everything there is more expensive than here (go figure).
Everything is about 20-50% more expensive (bumpers are 1k$AU minimum, but more like 1.2k, snorkels are 550, etc.), and since the Aussie dollar is about even with ours now, that translates to less practical than buying here. Yeah, it makes no sense that ARB parts are cheaper here than Australia, but they also have a minimum wage of 20$AU or more so I guess it evens out.
    Bottom line: order parts here.

Having said that, I would recommend OME 882 coils and the firm Nitrocharger shocks up front, and Dakar leafs and firm Nitrochargers in the rear. I have always had Dakar leafs on my trucks (love them) and I had 881 coils (I wish I had gotten 882s though) before I put my King coilovers in. ARB didn't get its reputation from nowhere, so there's no point in selling yourself short.

If you're taking the truck with you, you're going to have to deal with a LHD truck driving on the left, though.
My $.02 there would be to sell your prerunner, petrol-engined, American Tacoma before you leave and buy a diesel Hilux (superior and most are DC like your truck if that's what you like). You get a manual tranny, 3.0TD, RHD, and 4x4. Or, you could get a 70 series cruiser with either the old straight-6 diesel or the newer 4.5L TD V8. You can get wagon, short wheelbase, long wheelbase, pickup, and troopy versions of them down there. I drooled over them so much in my time down under.

    Best of luck.

The LHD driving thing doesn't bother me much. My first assignment was in Okinawa and I bought a used 1997 Camaro out there. I have no idea how it got to the island but it was there.

I am bringing my truck due to the prices on used cars out there. My co-workers have already emailed me plenty of things about the center of Australia, and the first thing people comment on is the price of an Aussie vehicle. If I were able to bring a Hilux back then there would be no hesitation about buying a truck there. I have already been told that my chances of bringing one back WHOLE is extremely slim.

For those of you who have installed an ARB bumper on a 2001....
....in the instructions it says on step #2 that the crush cans that need to come off are welded on. I don't think I'll have anything to be able to cut those off. I'm not exactly sure what the crush cans are but I would imagine they would be pretty beefy.

    Advice please?

Hm the used prices I saw were comparable to here, however, I do know that actual ownership of a vehicle down there is super expensive.

As for the ARB, I didn't have such issues on my 01 when I installed it. The crush cans are little hollow metal blocks that were bolted on the frame ends IIRC. I just pulled them and the crosspiece off and bolted on the beefier ARB ones.

So I find this link on how to install the bumper:

    http://www.expeditionswest.com/equipment/tacoma/arb_bumper.html

and this is the picture I am worried about...

I am working with my brother (in Houston) to find out if I even have the crossbar. I don't remember it, and the seller says it wasn't one of the parts he dropped off. According to him there were 4 parts besides the actual bumper, and I am thinking they are the crush cans and bumper mounts.

Do I NEED the crossbar? The ARB pdf isn't too clear since I have a 2001. I am hoping the crossbar was needed for the 2002 - 2004 models.

Anyone have any advice? ARB is closed for the day :(

I had to take my cross bar off for my plate install. Id think youd have to too as you use the frame ends right there as bolt up points.

Did you need the new crush cans? My brother says he can't find those either. According to the seller he left 5 pieces, and my brother took pictures of those.

    - bumper
    - two bumper mounts
    - skid plate
    - winch roller thing

Did anyone have trouble with the 5100 being too long in the front?

    too long?

    How?

As in the shock itself too long, or giving too much lift?

the Bilstein 5100 shock itself is about 1/2" longer than the OEM ones. Been on this thing for 2 hours and can't figure out how to get it in there.

Also which height setting should i go with? I got the 5100/881 combo for the ARB bumper (w/o winch).

Never heard of them being longer...maybe you should double check part #'s

where did you order them from?

And is it the shock body or the dampening rod that is longer?

Use the "0" postion if you are using lift coils. If you dont your ride will be unbearably stiff.

ordered them from DSM. The part number matches their "4" Bilstein shock package.

Finally got the front shocks on. The Bilstein PDF says that they are built 1/2" to 3/4" longer to prevent over-extending the suspension. Now on to the rear....

gotcha. The rear shocks are a breeze to do compared to the fronts.

What are you doing for lift in the rear?

No lift at all. The front upgrades are there to prevent the front from sagging with the ARB bumper. The rear is just Bilstein 5125 until I can figure out what leaf pack to go with. Hopefully this all works out.
