THIS...!!....This is the problem! My pads and pins are brand new and i still got the "click". If you inspect the front disc holes are big compared to the lugs. There is aprox 1/8 inch of play.

I thought I had bought the wrong disc's.

    Anyone else find this problem??

I accidentally found it on a Mazda 6 once years ago... it has those dumb little screws like Honda uses to hold the rotor to the hub, that always corrode and are a pain to get out. I left them out, and it did that. :homer:

Never had it happen on anything else, at least not with properly torqued lugs. I'd start by checking them, at least back them off and retighten them guttentight if you lack a torque wrench. I've been using a torque wrench on mine (always used to use the calibrated elbow, but I have one now so why not I guess) at like 90 ft/lb, and haven't noticed any clicking at all.

Mine clanks too. Seems to be getting louder at 50k miles.

The rotors arent moving, they're clamped between the hub and the wheel. The only way the rotors can shift around in there is if you leave the lugnuts loose, like so loose the wheel is going to fall off after a couple blocks.

Its the pads. All the tacomas ive owned have made that noise since day one

I had this as well. When I changed my front brake pads, I ordered two more of the pad springs. Instead of one on each side, it has two. No more click.

Toyota issued a TSB for this problem, attached here. I'll cut to the chase: purchase Genuine Toyota Brake Caliper Grease 08887-80609 (eBay, Amazon, other suppliers). Jack up the front of your truck and support safely. Remove the front wheels (and remember to clean the insides of the front hub openings on the wheels if you live in road salt country). Remove brake caliper clips and pins, and slide out your clunking brake pads. Clean everything for good measure: pads (backs and edges -not the surface unless you are sure you know what you're doing), pins, clips, calipers (brake cleaner and small wire brush). Apply the Toyota grease to the top and bottom edges of the brake pad steel back plates, as shown in the attached TSB. Reassemble and you're on your way.

For good measure, and because my 2006 TuRD pads are half-worn out and have been rattling around on washboard dirt roads for many miles (I bought this truck used), I applied CRC "Disc Brake Quiet" compound to both sides of the anti squeal shims. I don't prefer this stuff except where necessary due to design deficiencies, such as the inadequate "anti-rattle" paperclip-of-a-spring Toyota puts on the Tacomas. Years ago, as a working dealership mechanic, I always detested finding this orange CRC glop on vehicles I worked on. Seemed like the independent shops gooped up everything they installed, rather than installing the correct factory parts. These sorts of band-aids (including the Toyota grease, BTW) shouldn't be necessary in the presence of a well-designed anti-rattle system, which unfortunately Toyota neglected to provide on these Tacomas.

BTW, I have no real objection to pads making noise upon first application of brakes when changing direction -that's somewhat intrinsic to this type of fixed caliper design (although the Toyota grease seems to take care of that too). What I do object to is the inadequacy of the Tacoma anti-rattle mechanism such that the brake pads rattle in the caliper over every bump (sounding like the plastic front bumper cover and fog lights are about to fall off -which is another TuRD genius design, but I digress). My 1968 VW Squareback used ATE fixed calipers (two piston) with a design similar to the four-piston Tacoma calipers. However, even waaaay back then, the brake pads were well dampened with a simple and robust anti-rattle spring mechanism -the likes of which Toyota could have used on the Tacoma, but which they cheaped out on (like so many other things Tacoma). I imagine that this anti-rattle spring design is still in use on European cars using ATE calipers -it's a simple, effective design, and is cheap enough that new springs come in the brake pad kits.

Anyway, I hope this helps other 2nd Gen Tacoma owners solve this problem. It's a simple fix and quick to perform. Thanks for giving me a place to rant :goingcrazy:
