Replaced battery because it tested bad. However I can't put the truck in gear to move it. If I hold the start button long enough the engine will start. Has anyone had this problem with the third gens? I'm kinda screwed because I'm in a one car garage in a tight space at an apartment complex. Can't get transmission out of park.

Pop the small cap above the shifter and use a long screw driver to disengage the park lock.

Try what Bishop84 suggests. In Owner's Manual p.205, When shifter doesn't move.

It’s under warranty. Have Toyota pick it up.

Sucks to hear OP. Hope you get it in gear and driving. Keep us posted.

One more reason I’m glad I have a manual...

Will do thanks. My brake lights don't work. Nor do my running. All other lights come on.

So . . . you're thinking that something happened with the battery change?? Who changed it? Negative off first, and on last?? Did you use anything to keep power on the ECU during the change?
Keep us posted. Not sure what could have caused this.

Good point about keeping power to the ECU. Used to use a 9v battery/cigarette lighter insert to keep the Frontier ECU powered during battery change... is that even OK to do on these trucks?

All automatics with floor shifters should have that little removeable cap.

Thats the easy part.... 98% chance he hooked the battery up wrong, even if momentarily.

I was in the car business and lot porters did this more frequently than you'd imagine. Seems there's more protection in modern vehicles though so hopefully OP just has to replace some fuses and be ok.

I've seen this happen to cars from the 90s and the entire ECU and wiring harness would fry. Now it seems its mostly just replacing all the fuses that blow.

Battery tested bad. In fact when I pulled it the bottom had acid. The guy told me even after he tried charging it it was only at 40% of the rated cold cranking amps that was part of the problem. The other issue was the LED tell lamps. The first time it popped the 10 amp stop fuse. Once I changed that out I had brake lights but then it kept popping the tail lamp 7.5 fuse every time I would turn on the headlights. As soon as I put the OEM lamps back in problem was solved. Moral of the story third generations don't do LED very well.

I have said this before. When you post about problems, it would be very helpful if you told us about mods in the first place! Tons of "I fucked with my lights and now my truck won't work" threads.

    Glad you figured it out.

Thanks for all the help. As far as taking it to the dealership I was dreading that because talking to them this morning before I did more investigating they could care less that a wrecker couldn't easily get to it. The guy didn't understand why I was so worried about just getting it up there. Even try to tell me that if I couldn't get the transmission to release that it really wouldn't hurt it to drag it in park just to put it on the bed. Like I told him it might not hurt it right now but you can't tell me pulling against the parking pawl is good for it. Not only that are you going to take responsibility if something happens? He could not give me a straight answer lol.

When you mentioned the problem the first thing I thought of was aftermarket bulbs. There are a couple of threads related to bulbs and stuff like this happening. Since you didn’t mention it I figured maybe it was a fluke. Search the topic and you will see that others have had the same issue. Hasn’t been that long ago that I saw the most recent one. No LED bulbs for me that’s for sure. Between hyperflashing and this kind of stuff I am not risking it.

Absolutely I'm done with all that. Not really crazy about the LED I was just wanting the smoked lights. However it's not worth the headaches I can promise you that. I was reading the instructions and on the very back page it talked about it was normal when you first hooked it up for it to blow both fuses. I was thinking to myself that's not normal to blow fuses you have problems. I understand every once in awhile fuses can go bad but if it continues to blow which kept happening to me you have bigger problems. Going to try to return these.

Also the one weakness that I found with this truck is the OEM battery. Total junk. Only 6 months old and it already bit the dust. My brother's second gen had the same problem about a year later as well when it was new.
