Brake Upgrade: StopTech Rotors + TRD Performance Pads

Shoot I’m getting too confused on the calipers.

i have slotted DBA 4000 rotors… 32mm x 338mm. All i know is they don’t work with the 13WH ***
It was my impression that 14WA and 14WB were the same…ish. Or At least worked for the same rotor.

 

The 13WH is for the narrow 27.5mm rotor on the GX470. The GX460 has the 32mm. Both are 338 mm dia.

I would keep the DBA and get the 14WA or 14WB (they could be the same. I did the 5th gen page/setup with 14WA). I just recall someone mentioning some bolt holes were different sizes but cant confirm that.

338x32 is what you want for rotors. Your post seems incorrect. You want the wider ones not the narrow ones.

Unless you are going with a different setup. Keep the DBA and your pads (FYI all the 14X calipers use the same pads). 14WG Tacoma and 14WA same part pads. Unless your going to pick up hawks. The only thing you need to replace is the calipers.

 

Somewhere around 2017 toyota switched from M12 to M14 caliper mounting hardware. Exact date is unclear...that's the difference.

i may definitely be confused…
I have the rotors that will work with the 14WA calipers - but accidentally got 13WH calipers and pads.
The way I see it, to fix this I could:
• sell the rotors and get DBA42700S rotors to at will fit the calipers
• sell the calipers/pads and get 14WA calipers and pads

i feel like the rotors would sell easier, and when I compared the prices to fix my mistake, both getting rotors or new pads/calipers are about the same price.
I’d rather have the 32mm setup, but mostly what I’m after is the 338 diameter. I can’t lock my brakes with 35’s and oem brake components. The extra heat dissipation would be nice to have though.

good to know that OEM Tacoma pads will fit - 14 uses 14. My oem pads are smoked right now, but I may entertain the TRD pads now.

 

I would grab a set of calipers. the newer calipers and thicker rotors are a better set than the calipers you have now. You can get some pretty cheap. I had Centric Remans on my setup when I had it. Folks that have the older thinner rotors will upgrade to the 32mm rotors and 14WA as an upgrade on the GX.

The rotors will sell easier as I found the DBA were hard to find at a good price but if you already have then get the calipers. and call it a day. I later upgrade to Wilwood Aero6 calipers with the 338 rotors and was about to add the DBAs when I switched to stoptechs front and rear. (I had stoptechs in the rear so kept it all the same).


I would do this setup:

DBA 4000 338x32 rotors
14WA Calipers
Pad of choice - OEM worked well or grab a nicer set. check the thread I posted a bunch of different pad choices by folks.

I would check too those pads may even work with the 14WA calipers.

 

I checked at least for Hawk HPS Street Pads (

HB490F.665) and the same part number for 2005 GX470 and 2010 4Runner. If you wanted to keep the Stoptech Sports. Then all you need are new calipers.

oh which calipers do you have now? if they are 13 something then likely. I just did a quick check for a 2005 GX vs 2010 4runner and they both had the same part number for Hawks. Either way go with the new calipers. I recall the older GX design had failures or issues.

 

I have 13WH calipers now.
I checked between a 2009 gx 470 and a 2020 gx460. also the 2010 4runner limited that have the same 14x calipers. Stoptechs weren't the same.
I think I'll just try to grab some 14WA calipers for cheeep and see if the pads fit. If not, new pads aren't too expensive.

 

Anyone know if I can use these pads on either of my stock Tacoma calipers / rotors (‘05 and ‘16)




My limited understanding thinks they will, got them for my Tundra but went with EBC green at the last second.

I guess I should get rotors too?

 

Anyone have experience running OEM rotors with trd pads?

 

Rotors make no noticable difference in performance....as long as the rotor has the appropriate surface finish and runout and DTV within spec, there is nothing past that can make a rotor perform (with respect to friction levels) better.

OE rotors are excellent quality, but if they are installed carelessly on a rusty hub and the rotating assembly has excessive runout, they won't last long before a judder condition exists.

Pick a pad for your driving style and conditions. If you're not carrying an extra 1000lbs of crap and you drive like normal, the OE pads (or a premium aftermarket replacement type pad) will be a better choice than some super hi performance whiz bang high temp pad. Performance pads are designed to be performance pads at higher temps....if you're not running those high temps, don't bother.

What are you hoping to gain in this upgrade? What problems, if any, are you having with the brakes now, or what characteristics exist now that you are hoping to solve with this upgrade? Have you ever seen smoke or experienced fade out of your OEM brakes on the truck? How long have your OEM brakes lasted (time and mileage) on your truck?

 

Organic EBC green stuff isn't one I'd recommend for a Tundra, I wouldn't even recommend them for a Tacoma. They have good initial bite but fade very early with low peak operating temp, making it easy to put more energy into the pads than they can handle with a heavier truck. They are much better suited for a light weight car.

As for your pad question, 05 and 16+ take the same pads. Do 1st Gen Tundras and Tacomas take the same pads? If so they should be usable.

 

I think the truck / suv green might be different pads than the car green?

but now I will have to look and confirm if I’m running orange or green for the 5500 lb tundra.

 

Hmm. Does look like they came out with a new Truck/SUV green stuff "Elite" pad last year. My comments were to the original green stuff. I cannot comment on the new truck elite version.

z36-976 powerstop pads as compatible with 2005 and 2016 tacoma front calipers.

 

I’ll give them a try once the rotors show up. If they suck maybe I’ll hunt down some TRD pads.
