That's pretty cool.. I do photography (mainly for fire and law enforcement) so I am thorough when it comes to taking a look at my photos, that's how I found this gem (mismatch appearance).

I do see on the other threads I'm certainly not the only one, still kind of weird to me because when people drive by me and I see their shotty paint job - I'm always like 'damn that looks like shit'.

Wonder if people do that to me lol

Just a quick update. I took it by the Toyota service center to see if the service manager will take a look at it, he took a look at it and said that it just seems like it was just made that way and painted that way and that he didn't see the blotchiness in the fenders and asked me what I meant by blotchiness. So I turn the truck around in the Sun and I started pointing out everything and he said oh well it was painted by a robot and I can't see the robot messing up, so I told him that I guess I'm going to have to go get another customer that's waiting to come take a look at it that way we can see if they see it also. I don't think he like that so he said that we can go across the street and look at the other new Tacomas to see how there's look. So we did that and I said "oh wow, none of these have issues with them and you can clearly tell that mine does right now standing by this one". So he's going to pass it along to the regional representative to see if they have any known issues or what they think that they could do to remedy the problem.

It's possible your door was "panel changed" at the factory. Meaning after it was painted,it was damaged beyond repair. Although the new door was run down the same line, painted by the same robot, metallic paint does weird things. They could've had a batch changeover between the time the new door was ordered as well, lots of variables here.

Just went outside and checked a colleague's brand new Dodge truck red color with a LOT of metal in the paint and his - based on the light angle - paint also has a few different hues. I kind of like it with shimmering color hues.

It's not just the door now. There are blotchy marks down the upper portion of the panels as if the robot was just shooting metallic every second or so.

A random person asking about the Tacoma at a gas station pointed it out also.

If it wasn't overcast I could probably get a photo of it.

Can you exchange it? As you said, yours compared with an identical one on the lot, if pain looks different next to each other in the same lighting conditions, the problem is on Toyota as defect. Only problem is getting the dealer to bring a brand new one and park it next to yours in the same orientation to check the color reflection under the same lighting conditions. Different angles will give you different results.
Best is to park the trucks NOT parallel but one in the back of the other in this way both being exposed to the same light angle.

Hopefully the regional rep will contact me this week and want to take a look at it. Unfortunately the ones they have on the lot right now are not identical other than the paint color.

I didn't even want to contact Toyota because they'll document this on the VIN, but then I figure it may be better to contact them while the vehicle still has triple digit miles so they can document it so no one can say I had paint work done to the vehicle.

It was nice knowing I'm not the only one, but it definitely bothers me walking out and picking it apart because it's not something I'm just going to forget about.

    Hopefully there is a resolution.

1-All you need is identical paint color on a taco not Prius.
2-If color paint is different, contact Toyota ASAP and have the dealer also confirm on paper that your truck is poor applied. The sooner the better before scratches get on.

Appears to be quality control, all bolts etc match and don't appear to have been touched.

Just weird as hell, didn't expect such an adventure with my first Tacoma lol

There is a thread in the 2nd Gen forum that I was part of where this was an issue with metallic paints including my pyrite. Regardless of paint color it was always the rear passenger door. I ALWAYS notice repainted cars all around me and have a detailed eye for auto body work. I watched my truck come off the trailer and took it home wrapped in plastic. It never had any dealership body work but did have the rear passenger door mismatch.

Just an update and also using this thread to document communication..

Yesterday I had a meeting with the Toyota regional rep.. unlike the service manager who claimed he didn’t see what I was talking about, the regional rep did see immediately and walked around the truck not figuring out why my door clearly doesn’t match.
He took a paint thickness meter over all of the panels and said the thickness is the same and that he looked into it himself and can verify there was no damage at the port etc.

Right now they’ve offered to repaint the door, however I’m not comfortable going that route with paint work on a brand new truck because it shouldn’t need it.

Still kind of up in the air and told me to contact Customer Experience or whatever to see if they have any other options..

They won't replace the truck for a paint problem on one door. Regardless of what you're comfortable with. Have the door re sprayed and be done with it.

I got my MGM in December, build date 08-17, New Mexico, looks nothing like that, all same shade right around. I'm in Hawaii.....I would tell the dealer get another truck!

Seriously OP. I know it sounds shitty and really it is. However, I have had my front passenger fender replaced, door repaired, and bumper repaired. A dumpster decided to fly into the side of my truck when 100mph winds hit here on Kodiak. The body shop did a excellent job and I can't tell factory from the repaint. My truck is Quicksand. I bet if you get the work done, you will not see a difference from factory.

My main thing was for them to acknowledge it and document it, not so 'pissed off' about it.. But appreciate them offering to repaint it.

This also allows others with the issue to document their issue as well with Toyota/Regional Rep/Dealership.

Depending on the device/computer used to view the images, it may not look bad.. As it didn't look bad to the service manager when I brought it in the other day until he went outside and said 'oh, shit.. yeah'.
