Brilliant !!! Satoshi Emblem Answer: Converted into Mod Write-Up W/ Pics

Hey Jack, your toyotapartszone.com link on your 1st. post has a list of addt'l parts. Does the emblem itself come with clips to attach to the grill? Or, do we have to purchase them a la carte? I'm not gonna separate the letters, just paint & attach it. I'm guessing you ordered extra screws per letter. Unfortunately, the website has no pics to identify parts being ordered. Thanks.

 

It has two holes in the back that will not work to attach to your satochi. You can either epoxy more plastic on it or get the zip tie squares from home depot sand a little epoxy them on and zip tie them on there. I has a super gret hold.

The toyota emblem has the factory holes for the fj crusier

 

As Victheyankee pointed out, it needs to be altered.
It's just the Emblem, and you don't need anything else off the list.
The Emblem is for an '86 Land Cruiser and has two protruding posts,
extruded out of the back for mounting on the '86.
These have to be hacksawed off. Then the back is flat.

For one piece Emblems, I have read a few different mounting methods:

Drill 2 or 3 holes thru the plastic between the letters
and use screws, washers and nuts.
any small common machine screw will work (4-40, 6-32, 8-32).
Obtain at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc
Paint the screw heads Black

I'm not exactly sure how the zip tie squares (post above) are secured, but...
Zip Tie Squares and Zip Ties

Zip Ties (Black) around the plastic between letters and thru the mesh.

3M Double-Back Tape, Silicone, or an Adhesive.
Keep in mind, damage to the mesh and the ability to remove in the future.

Think that's all I've seen, except tapping from the back

I'd say the 2-3 black head screws thru or D-B Tape are the easiest options

Thanks for the informative reply. I just recently satoshi'd my grill, but it still needs an emblem for the finishing touch. Ima gonna place an order from your toyotapartszone link. Machine screws sounds good to me. Thanks again.

My Write-Up was specific to the Emblem and any reference to the Satoshi Grill fabrication was incidental.
I didn't think the Grill portion important, as there are many write-ups on the Satoshi already.
I used an Epoxy from Home Depot called, of all things "5 Minute Epoxy".
Manufactured by ITW Performance Polymers (Florida).
Klipp11 in his Write-in ("Satoshi GrillCraft *How To* w/ pics" ) used SureMix.
I followed alot of his Write-Up for of my Satoshi
I think all the Epoxies will do the same job (within like catagories)
It comes in various setup times - 5 minute, 20 minute, etc
There's a good Write-Up on "The Other Site" about securing the screws/bolts
I cut small pieces of my Grill interior to use as spacers, to mount the bolts on.
Epoxied and Clamped them
This spaced the bolts about an 1/8" farther away from the grill opening.
It also enabled leaving the screw heads on.
After the spacers set up, I centered the mesh where I wanted it and locked the Stainless 6-32 screws I was using onto the mesh with nuts and washers.
I used 6-32's because of the size of the holes in my mesh.
You could use larger, like 8-32, if your mesh holes are larger.
I've had no problems with the 6-32's
Screws position thru holes they will be in after epoxied in place. Again Epoxied and Clamped them.
If you epoxy them in the wrong place, you'll be cutting the mesh to adapt to the screws
There are some pics in my gallery of the back side of my grill, but once again, geared towards the Emblem, not the Satoshi.
I've not worked with JB Weld, so can't comment on it.
I'll see if I can dig up some relevant pics in my Gallery before posting.

The Following is Abbreviated from Post #1

How I Screwed them on: Refer to #8 Above

What Kind of Screw Head: Refer to 2nd & 3rd Pictures Above

What What Size is Needed: Refer to #3 Above

You Don't Have Much Tools: Refer to 1st picture and #3 Above (Drill Press with Depth Stop and a Bottoming Tap)
You're gonna need a little more than basic screwdrivers
I drilled with depth stop. If you don't you'll drill thru the face of the letters.
Then you'll have to patch the letters. Screws need to be cut to length - Short !

As I recall, I used a 561 Multi Purpose Cutting bit and a 193 and/or 194 High Speed Cutting Bit.
Use great care as they have a mind of their own and will get away from you.
Ask me how I know.
Also watch the collet, it will be gouging your paint as you're watching the bit.
Ask me how I know.
Ideally a Router style bit with a wheel from the back side of the grill would work great,
but I don't believe Dremel makes one, or at least I couldn't find one.
Then use a flat file to clean the edges flush.
Use a small triangular file and a utility knife to get into the corners.
Then sand the hell out of it.
Don't have Pics as I wasn't documenting the grill, just the emblem.
The grill has many write-ups, so I saw no need to do another.

what grit sand paper you went with process???

 

For the Emblem, I roughed it up with 600
Used a small file and 600 folded for the Rabbet around the letters

To Color Match the recessed portion of the Grill Surround,
I used 240 to smooth out the patches
600 Pre-Paint
1200 to wet sand between coats
Couldn't readily find finer than 1200, but would have used 2000 if I found it
May re-paint it this summer. Didn't come out as well as I wanted

Nope, didn't use bondo
Plastic fillers, epoxy and finishing putty
240 grit smoothed it out nicely
"600 Pre-paint" = I sanded all surfaces with 600 grit before applying any paint
