My step-grandfather built his own camper on a '55 Chevy and my step-dad built a camper in '66. Makes me the 3rd generation camper builder.

Ran a 12v line to the sink in prep of installing the pump and installed a 12v outlet.

Finally got around to starting to install a real RV lockset.

Just before starting I'm thinking I'm about to cut a hole in a perfectly good door.

This door is only 1/2" thick so I'll need to make a spacer and still need to figure out the door jam.

    Dude,

    Very, very nice job.

I built the camper below. Took me about 5 years and is still progressing. No plans just started building it one day. Used pressure treated with redwood and cedar. I've had 3 RV's and went through rot in the ceiling and wanted to use a wood that stood the test of time.

I have a short bed so I built a slide so I could sleep fully extended. Below is a picture of the inside with the slide in. A bit messy since I use it once a month for Boy Scouts and backpacking but you get the idea.

I also built a stand so I could take it off quick with one person.

Weighs in at 800lbs. Added air bags to the rear and swamped the tires for BFGoodrich All Terrain TKO's to handle the weight. Rock solid and doesn't move going down the freeway at 70.

I think of making another camper and LOVE what you did. But that would be like being married to 2 women. Which one would you take? To vested in this one...

Your craftsmanship is far superior to mine. I'm more of an overbuild and git er done kind of guy. Either way I am very impressed. Wish you lived closer so we could compare notes.

Cool, a slider on a home built. I like your hoist system too, makes it easy on/off. Takes me about an hour each way. I pull the tail gate off which takes a bit with the anti-theft device and rear camera cable. Then pull the rear bed bolts and install front centering spacer blocks on the front bed rail. Lay out wooden tracks out on my gravel driveway, move the camper out, set up the jacks, and hoist it up. Once the camper is on the truck I install longer bolts through the floor of the camper and bed into the truck frame. Front spring loaded tiedowns are installed through the small doors at the front of the box. Strap in the battery box between camper and bed and secure it.

What are you using to tie yours down with?

I was thinking about building a full cabover for my next truck as that was what the plans I purchased were for.

If you look carefully on the 1st photo you will see straps that tie down the rear (red). I've also made it a very tight fitting box so with the tail gate up it doesn't go anywhere.

I was very careful with the cab-over and have 2x2's all the way to the front and the siding (1x6's) support as well as the roof. I've had 3 (small kids) up over the cab with no issues. I originally tried to sleep up there but had only one curled sleeping position.

I can take the camper off in 5 minutes with just myself. Notice the eye hooks on the side of the camper. Those are the places where the winch hooks up to pull off the camper.

I also have a "Safety Rack" to protect the back window since I broke it once and then installed a remote slider (very cool).

Next project is to build a canopy in the same motif as the camper.

Again, dam man, you have a very cool camper and the passion and persistence that not many people have.

where did you get the windows and how expensive were they? Is it possible to build some to fit whatever size you want?

Got em from ebay used. $60 to $130 ea. The cheaper ones didn't come with interior trim rings. A local repair place told me to look for someone in my area whose salvaging rv parts.

After using the camper awhile I've gotten a better idea on what I need for gear storage, so I'm in the process of updating the interior. I also finally got around to ordering a water tank from Ronco Plastics

Built a shelf for cooking gear, close to the door since I'll be cooking outside.

The 8 gallon water tank, RV41W, will fit nicely in the bottom of what was a coat closet at the front of the camper. I'm thinking of changing the faucet to an on-demand style with knobs. I won't have hot water so I'll pipe cold to both sides. The one in the photos here is a push down to turn on and shuts off when released, awkward to wash hands.

K & N airfilter, custom built 10" sub boxes, pioneer head, mag-lite mod, Blue LED dash lights, custom painted engine cover, mud flap removal mod, alarm/remote start installed,

I used these when I built the kids play house. Would use these myself if I ever got around to building my own camper.

It looks like the screens on the outside. I wonder how those would hold up over time. They have safety glass which is good.

They are on the outside, but they are removable like a regular full sized window, so you could just remove them and store them inside out of the elements if you wanted to.
