Building a roof rack

Hey,
So I'm going canoeing and I need to build some sort of rack to strap the canoe to. The trouble is I have a shell on my truck. I've looked around quite a bit and all the plans I've seen are for trucks without shells. Does anyone have any plans or basic advice for building a simple rack on top of the shell. My shell does have 2 sets of brackets on each side, so i'll have something to mount to.
