Is someone else at fault? If so then you go through their insurance and don't call your company. Regardless of what they say, it is a claim and is a statistic that will be used against you in the future. As for the body shop, you can go to whoever you want. The way the scam works is the insurance company will give you a check for what they claim to be the damage. It will undoubtedly be lower than what the real damage is. Once you go to a body shop they will file a supplemental claim for the additional work. Essentially you can take their low offer and pocket the cash and do whatever you want. You don't even have to fix the damage, but if you want the full value, you will have to take it to a body shop. Your 4x4 shop can write a supplemental claim, but the chances of the adjuster just accepting it from them is slim unless they really know body work. I had a guy in my shop once that had body shop experience and would help customers file claims. He would go toe to toe with insurance adjusters when people would bring cars in with bent suspension parts because we weren't a body shop, but he always won.

Similar situation, but from a deer. My deductible is $2500. It’s not perfect but I’m about $2400 out of pocket.

If you want to fix it yourself, check Craigslist. I see bumper parts all the time. Of course you would have to get the paint matched. Inferno bumper for $399 on Portland Craigslist today.

I’m still baffled by these high ass deductibles. 1k, someone above said 2500k. I haven’t had a deductible over 500 in the last 20 years currently sitting at 200/500/200 in coverage with uninsured, underinsured comp/ collision and I pay 68.00 a month/345.79 ever 6 months for my plan. With a 100 comp deductible and 500 collision.

not sure if you checked with your insurance, but when I got hit by a deer, I didn’t have to pay a deductible (I use State Farm).

It is either a bad driving record or they live in a state like Fla that we have idiots like Morgan and Morgan that drive our rates through the roof and you have no choice but to go with a high deductible just so you can afford basic coverage.

yeah - to be honest I haven't adjustment my deductible since I was in my teens, and had originally set it up to be affordable since I had to pay it on a $10/hr hour income. On the bright side, my payment is now only $50 a month and this is my first claim 13 years later - so i probably came out ahead.

Definitely will look into it moving forward though - already pay a bit of a premium to stay with state farm, but having a long time neighbor and friend as your agent definitely has its perks(or just having an actual agent in today's digitized world).

    It's crazy isn't it?!
Insurance agents almost never offer to sell you a lower deductable. it's the one upcharge they avoid, because for most, the difference is tiny and those with lower deductables are more likely to use their insurance,,,,, which is what they don't want.

It depends on age, sex, location, vehicle, driver's history, and company used. I am 25, I pay 108 for 3 vehicles, Tacoma full coverage with 500 deductible, 1 commercial/gov use, and 1 liability.

they often do, depends on where you live, and you often to specifically ask or mention it for them to actually give the money for that. Its usually called a Diminished Value Claim.

Turns out they don't pay out diminished value in North Carolina - guess the bright side is that I plan to drive this one into the ground just like I did with the '98 before it.

Got a quote within their network for 2700 bucks - figure i'm just going to file the claim since my agent still claims it wont impact my insurance as it was a hit and run.

Biggest issue now - every freaking bumper is back ordered for like 12 weeks -_- (first world problems)

Parts alone would come close to that amount. But the teardown to inspect for additional damage would be would easily double the price...and then there is paint materials that are crazy expensive too.

I mean it was the shop of my choice that I drove in and had them do an estimate prior to finding out they were within the insurance network - so I think the quite value is probably pretty spot on.
