edit CANADIANS - SEE POST BELOW - NOTIFY TRANSPORT CANADA THAT YOUR MELTED DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS ARE A SAFETY DEFECT AND SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO RECALL.

Notice my daytime running lights have started to bubble on my 2009 Tacoma. Went to the dealer with Warranty Policy bulletin POL 14 -03 which is the warranty enhancement for the melting lights. Was told this was in the U.S. only.

Did any Canadians manage to get their lights replaced under this warranty enhancement? Please post and let me know. I will be phoning Toyota Corporate as recommended by the service manager at the dealership and could use some extra ammunition when discussing this with them. My vehicle fits the VIN range on the document.

As DTRL's are required safety equipment all across Canada, I may be contacting Transport Canada to lodge a complaint as well as this is certainly a safety issue.

That may very well be - however, if they were fixing the problem, it indicates they acknowledge that there was the problem. Was interested in knowing if any Canadians had this fixed for free - even under the Canadian extended warranty.

They did aknowledge there was a problem , a problem that would normally be covered under the 3 year bumper to bumper , and extended the warranty period for them until the end of last year

Having said that , I believe there were a few Canadian posters in the main Melting Headlights thread that had it done

I had mine done. It took a lot of work and digging, but I got my new Headlights. But the program expired in late 2014 or early Jan 2015.

Thanks very much folks ! - the additional information and link will be very helpful. If anyone else has a strategy please post. As we are legally bound to have these on - as is the case with seat belts for instance, now mandatory across Canada, this is a safety issue and Toyota should be bound to replace poor parts much as restraint systems and emissions systems are typically warranted longer than the basic truck warranty.

It did until end of last year , my dealership checked my truck last summer and printed off the warranty extension paperwork for me

Would be nice if they extended it in Canada. Why no love for us north of the border?

To continue on this thread....here is something Canadian owners can do....takes about 5 minutes. Not sure anything will be resolved but as they say the squeeky wheel gets the grease.

Go to the Transport Canada website and lodge a complaint. Here is the web site:

    https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/PCDB-BDPP/fc-cp.aspx?lang=eng

You will be required to give name, address, phone number, vehicle info including the VIN and purchase date, tick off a number of boxes and then write in your safety concern. If it will help, just copy and paste the one I have written here:

"Acknowledged problem on Toyota Tacoma 2005-2010 model years is that lense covering
government mandated daytime running lights melts making light ineffective. Repairs were
covered by a warranty extension in both U.S. and Canada.

While repairs to melted lenses are still being carried out in the United States under
warranty POL14-03, (where DTRL's are not legally required) a similar plan in Canada
WAB2197 was suspended a year ago and Canadian owners, if they wish to repair the
manufacturing defect, will pay $500.00 parts and labour to be compliant with highway
    laws.

In Canada, Toyota should make this a safety recall in line with such other
legally mandated equipment such as restraint devices and emission control devices -
drivers of these vehicles should expect that the safety of their vehicles should not be
    compromised by shoddy parts."

For myself, don't want to sound whiny, as generally my truck was the best buy at the time (2009) but looking back there has not been one minute of ownership when something hasn't been wrong with the vehicle - radio coming on all by itself, (three times) rusted wheels, (replaced), brake pedal switch, air conditioner quit, serpentine belt pulleys defective, 4X4 problems - when it comes time for new vehicle shopping it is going to be a whole lot easier to consider the competition when making a final choice - and our family has 3 Toyota vehicles. Strongly recommend getting the extended warranty if you can get a good deal at purchase as it will be needed - the myth of Toyota quality is BS.

    Hey, OP...

    1) Did you ever get a recall letter from Toyota ?
    2) Did you buy new or used?
    3) Did you buy from a Toyota dealer?

Also note, that a few years back, when our dollar was at par, many used Tacos were brought into Canada from the US by privateers. Hence, no further tracking of the vehicle and no recall notice.

-bought new from Toyota dealer in Canada - factory order - no notification from anyone including frequently visited service department at dealer. Would not have known about anything related to burnt out lenses except for this forum for which I am thankfull.

I did receive notices for recalls including clock spring, cut off accelerator pedal (done without my permission) and leaf springs - although nothing done about this one yet.

That's very odd IMHO ... I got a notification on the DTRLs and my truck isn't equipped with them. Seems to me they missed you somehow :notsure:, but that should provide further support for you to get yours replaced by exception. In addition to your efforts through Transport Canada, have you tried going past the dealer to Toyota Corporate or a regional Toyota Service Manager? I'm not sure how they are structured for you in Canada, but you seem to have a valid case if you can find a reasonable person to deal with. I do wish you luck, you're getting shorted here and it's not right in my opinion. Good luck man.
