Busted my 5100?!

im running the rcd 3"-4" 5100's and they work great with my expo pack......bumps hit before shock tops out....

funny thing is i was running 2"aal and 1" blocks for 2 years with stocker shockers and no problems.\

and yes i do wheel the shit outa it

 

I've found that after lifting my truck recently with front 5100 Bilsteins set to 2.5in and installed a rear Toytec 1.5in AAL, my truck sits pretty level. I have felt my stock rear shocks top out when pulling into steep driveways. I have been looking for rear shocks and have found that that aftermarket 5100 Bilsteins for the rear are only 0.4in longer than my stock shocks so I wouldn't necessarily gain much going with them.

Now going off the Downsouth Motorsports site shows lengths of the 5100 rears listed below in two different sizes, factory length and extended length...

0" to 1.5" Rear Lift on NON-TSB leaf springs, Shock Part #: BE5-C478-T0
Extended Length: 22.94"
Collapsed Length: 14.02"

3" to 4" Rear Lift Shock Part #: BE5-B110-T5
Extended Length: 27.28"
Collapsed Length: 16.34"

Now since I know my Tacoma didn't have the TSB done on it for the rear and only adding a Toytec 1.5in rear AAL, I decided I wanted to find a shock with measurements somewhere in between the two sizes listed for the 5100 rears. Looking at the available sizes in the 5125's, they have one that looks to be perfect for 1.5" to 3" void that the 5100's don't really provide.

I knew I wanted a shock with an extended length between 22.94 and 27.28 and a collapsed length between 14.02 and 16.34. Well the 5125 has one with 9.24" of total travel with 24.35 extended travel and 15.11 collapsed travel. It appears it would be a good length rear shock for my setup.

Good point, BUT.....

You need to take into account the fact that you'll need a loop to stem adapter, to make that shock work on your Tacoma. And said adapter adds approximately 1.5" to the length. So your 15.11 collapsed dimension will become 16.5-ish...the B110 shock will be shorter when collapsed, with no adapter required.

I have rear TSB springs and a 1" block and I recently installed the longer 5100's. I had to make bumpstops about 3/4" longer than factory. I am very happy with the longer 5100's they have tons of droop and still compress the tires well into the fender. The shorter Bilsteins top out way too much for me.

 

Did you have to go with longer brake lines also?

 

I did not install longer brake lines, I made a relocation bracket for them. I took a piece of 1 1/2" square tubing and cut it in half. So it was basically a C shape, then drilled a hole in the top and bottom. I unbolted the bracket that mounts on top the axle housing and put the new bracket in between the mount on the axle housing and the brake line bracket. I now have plenty of slack in the rear lines when flexed.
But to answer your question you will need to either relocate your lines or buy longer ones with the longer bilstein shocks.

 

OP, can you report back on how the 3-4'' rcd rear 5100's are doing? do they bottom out?

33-230337? These look like they don't need an adapter for the 5125 and measure 15.01″ collapsed x 24.38″ extended?

 

Good for the thread resurrection for me. I noticed the boot slipped off my passenger side rear 5100 last week and had to push it back down. I am running the wheelers 1.5 AAL and kept the overload in place, technically giving me 2" of lift. I only do off roading on forest roads, but this was after a trip to the ski resort. Gonna read through this thread to see what's up.

 

I'm looking to do the same lift in the rear... just haven't decided whether I will be leaving the overload in or not. I was also glad to see this thread pop up to see what suits best.
