    Hey everyone!

Okay, this is admittedly a horrible first post. I have been a lurker here for a long time and really had hoped I'd have something helpful or interesting to say my first time around.

    Not so much.

So I picked up a beautiful Tacoma OR DC 4x2 three weeks ago. I went shopping for a 4x4... and ended up with the 4x2. Not sure how that happened. I've always had 4x4s... sold my 4x4 to buy a new 4x4 and never really felt comfortable in a truck that isn't a 4x4. I live in SoCal and don't offroad at all really. But I do snowboard a lot - big bear, mount high, mammoth etc. Also, I'm from Seattle so I drive up there a lot during the holidays - Thanksgiving, Xmas etc - which means I gotta cross the siskiyous and deal with whatever weather is up there.

Anyway. Somehow I let the dealership sell me on the TRD OR 4x2 and all of its capabilities (locker etc). I was going to buy an SR5 4x4 for the same price - but the TRD had a way better interior, navi, all of the options etc. It just looked way cooler and I got the rundown about how I live in socal and will barely use 4x4 etc (which is true).

But I just feel safer for me and my fam to be in a 4x4.

Let me say that I take 100% full blame for this. I realize that - should I switch - I will take the hit as I should. It all just sucks.

I called the dealer and he said that I would lose about $2k depreciation and tax and license. That's about $5k in three weeks. The truck is mint (of course) with 600 miles on it.

Not sure if anyone has any advice or not. I promise I've searched the forums and read every thread about this type of thing and it seems like there really isn't anything to do.

I put $10,000 down on the truck and financed roughly $25,000. First payment isn't until October 25th.

Any dealers on here that can help me? Should I just suck it up and try and enjoy the truck? Buy tons of sandbags and tire chains?

    Blah.

    Congrats on new truck.

    1) How long do you plan to keep this truck?

If you plan to keep it a long time, $2,000 to trade for the 4x4 isn't a big deal. If you are a short time owner, keep it, fly to seattle rent 4x4 for your trips.

I live in So Cal, and own a 4x4 TRD OR.

    Good luck.

Hey, thanks. I would lose the $2,000 plus tax and license. Which was $3,000. So I'd have to pay tax and license again if I got the SR5 4x4. I think... but thanks for the advice!

Have you ever found yourself driving to one of the mountains and absolutely needed 4x4? Or do you tend to only use 4x4 during blizzards, or tend to not drive during them?

Honestly, if you find yourself slipping and sliding, maybe add some weight and/or get better tires.

    That's just me though.

Trade it in, sell it private party, whatever.. you got smoothed over by a salesman and sold on something you didn't even want. What's $5k compared to $35k for the wrong truck you didn't actually want?

Get rid of it how you see fit and go forward.

in my state the trade value knocks down the sales tax, so you only pay tax on the vehicle cost minus the trade. Also you can transfer registration from one auto to another again saving some money. Check into these things first.

What is the MSRP difference from what you got to what you want? Or what is the dealer willing to give you for the return and sell you for the replacement.

Salesman tried that with me when I was shopping. Same excuse like I'm a fool for wanting 4x4 in SoCal. No one would believe me when I said I wanted to go off-roading, and the ones who did claimed all I needed was a 4x2 and diff locker. I knew they were full of it.

The truth was at the time inventory was limited and the salesman just want to sell me a truck no matter what. I remained patient and kept searching until I found the truck I wanted. I don't go off-roading every month, but when I do I always put the 4x4 to use. I use crawl control on occasion and rarely use the diff locker.

I'm not sure how it is where you are from but where I live you don't pay tax on the trade in amount, so essentially you would only pat tax on the price difference between your trade in and the price of the new truck. I doubt that would be $3000.
Personally if I was not happy I would trade it and take the loss. It's not something I would make a habit of doing but it is essentially what I did with my 2014 Tacoma that had 6000 miles on it.

    Same here.

Not only I always get the "you don't need a 4x4 in So Cal," I also get the "women don't need 4x4"

As usual, salesmen are ignorant and dumb, not realizing I just drove in a new LC or a new LX, which are 4x4 ;)

Thus I order them in OR, where dealers have plenty of 4x4, and no issues, and title them in MT. Not paying a dime to the moron govt in CA or the moron salesman of CA.

He is in Los Angeles. We don't have that here....

My 2016 OR TTL would have been $3600 if I was registered in CA. As I am trading it next month for the TRD Pro, additional TTL would be $4300. There is no credit on your TTL, and it doesn't transfer to the newer car.

Don't feel bad. I bought an SR5 TSS package and traded it a week (300 miles) later for my Sport. Cost me a grand. I'm happy (mostly). If it's not want you want, you'll never stop thinking about getting what you want. Life goes on.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I drove a 2x4 for 10 years with zero problem; it's all in the tires. I say enjoy the truck and lower maintenance cost

Check Out My Build Thread :)
personally if you only go snow boarding a few times a year and typically you're not going off road to get to these locations (plowed roads/maintained) and you live in southern California and you stated not much off roading in general... I would say just keep the truck and save the money IMO or use the money and get much nicer tires and you'll be set... but this is just the route I would go... in the end do whatever makes you feel happy about the truck... if you feel that you made a horrible mistake then trade it in sooner rather than later... the longer you stew over it the more depreciation in the trade in value...

Thanks to this forum, I always found myself better informed about the truck then the salesman. I was also shocked about how little product knowledge they had. Its amazing how much easier it is to sell a product when you are more familiar about it than your customer. Its not that the salesman are morons (some might be), it has to do with laziness and no pride in their job. If they actually had a true interest in the product they are selling they would know what the Qi button did and not have to check with their managers to find out its for wireless charging.

If I was in charge of a sales team at Toyota, I would make it mandatory that my salesmen studied forums like these and become experts on the products they are paid to sell.

    Agree with you.

It just ins't Toyota. My brother bought an Alpina B7, it was the same there. The Lexus salesman told me the RCF had a Turbo engine instead of a V8. All (car) salesman seems to be cut out of the same cloth.

Thus I like the factory order options. I check online, order what I want, and have to use the sleazy dealership to take delivery, in lieu of direct sales at the moment.

What dealer did you buy your truck from? PM me if you want my Toyota contact. I drove 70 miles one way to get exactly what I wanted and they had the best price.
