Howdy I've got a line on a 2001 Tacoma 5spd reg cab 4x4, for around $7600 with a little under 90k miles. Its in great shape all over, frame was checked a year or so ago passed and coated but i live in the northeast so i'd call that a band-aid if anything. Frame has no holes, only average surface rust where coating is chipping.

Is this a decent deal, and the only thing that concerns me about buying this truck is tacoma frame rot, how big of an issue is it for the 2001's and what can i do triple check this frame? Thank You

I'd steer clear personally. It's a huge issue and that year is out of range for free frame replacement. Look for a southern truck with no rust.

Register on this site then put the VIN number in to see if the frame has been inspected. It needs to be inspected before the beginning of this year to be eligible for repair or replacement in the future. If not you're on your own for it.

    Buy it!

That is a great price for a 4x4 2001 with <100K miles. The Toyota frame recall extends to 15 years passed in service date, right? So you should be good till late 2015/early 2016.

Decent.. But I wouldn't go for it unless it was $7000. Try talking him down

Great info. In late 2012 there was service done and it reads:

TACOMA CUST SUPPORT TACOMA CUST SUPPORT : ~|~TACOMA CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROGRAM ~|~CHECK FRAME CONDITION ~|~NO RUST PERFORATION FOUND

SERVICE CAMPAIGNS SERVICE CAMPAIGNS: ~|~SERVICE CAMPAIGN SSC 90D ~|~NO RUST PERFORATION FOUND ~|~APPLY TACOMA CRC

Is that the inspection you were talking about, and am i now eligible for coverage until 2016?

Yeah I believe thats it, then they'll replace the frame if you have an issue down the road. If the rest of its solid thats a great price with that mileage.

So on that site it would be specific if frame inspection was done? I looked it up and it doesn't say it was done on mine but does say inspections were done on a regular basis. Am I still able to have this inspection completed?

I imagine my eligibility is gone as far as the coverage. I looked the truck over thoroughly before I purchased and couldn't find any rust on the frame. It has a black coating on the entire frame also. Is this the coating that was put on??

If you do, try to have the frame replaced as soon as you can.. Chances are they will say no, but with enough begging, they might :)

Just for a sense of protection.

My understanding is that you have 15 years from when the truck was put in service (i.e bought) regardless of ownership.

95-00 trucks that had frame rot were bought back at 1.5x kbb price and 01-04 trucks either get undercoating or frame replacement. So you could be the 5th owner, if youre under the 15 year window and can show registration in your name, youre good.
