Craigslist backyard breeders are just as bad as puppy mills

Rescued this guy out of a cardboard box at 6 weeks old. One of the best decisions I ever made. Three years later he's my best friend.

Spike the Shih Tzu is the first "new" dog we've had in a while--we generally go used...

He is older now and generally a "good dog"--but he has his moments:

Just about the only sensible thing my "ex" ever said was: "People say you cannot buy love--but that's not true, you can buy a dog..."

Sorry no offense, but please don't refer to a dog as "used" ever again.

all my dogs have been rescues. all have been awesome. one of my current dogs, Nacho, was found chained to a tree at a house on an army base. at the adoption place, he was cool and chill. when we got home, his sketchiness and fear came out. it almost became a problem. well, it was a problem. it took some work, but he's better now. and he's such an awesome dog. to think that someone on a base just chained him up kills me. knowing that all rescues have stories, i just can't bring myself to consider a breeder.

To return to buy vs rescue: my $0.02 would be that it's a fact that the ratio of pups to humans being born everyday in the US is 7:1 so that's a strong argument in favor of adopting because as long as there is demand for puppy mills and similar atrocities those scumbags won't go away. I say rescue unless you absolutely need certain traits in dogs such as protection or livestock herding

You must be one of those "inclusive", "diverse", and all that people. First thing out of your mouth, over a semantic issue, is to fall back to personal insult--classy!

No. But referring to a dog as used is fucking disgusting.

I haven't adopted from a shelter, but took in a stray a few years ago and he has been the best dog anyone could ask for. American Bulldog/Pit mix, he was so scared and lonely after being abandoned that he just followed us home, and never left our side once we were friendly to him. My roommate from the time has him full time now, but Dax (the dog) get so excited every time he sees me he might take your legs out running up so fast.

Right now we have a Pomeranian that my girl had been wanting her whole life, he just turned 10 months. House training has been a pain and he thinks he's in charge. Definitely like the big Lebowski says, "He's a Pomeranian and he has papers and I don't want him to get upset!" lol. But we want two more and they will both be adopted (disclaimer: we got the Pom at christmas time, and EVERY shelter on Oahu had every dog adopted which was amazing)

    OP, get some doggles!

Not sure how that correlates to anything. High school education I assume?
See, I can be just as asinine as yourself.

IIRC (in fact well documented above) it was you that initiated the personal insults and vulgarity.

    And FWIW; MSME (MIT '71)

    -----------------------------------------------
And actually I can be just as, and perhaps more, asinine than you. Spock said it best; "It was far easier for you as civilized men to act as barbarians, than for them as barbarians to act like civilized men."

I 110% agree each we have had for well over 50 years rescued/adopted (dare I say it "used") dogs--its' just this last little "shit" tzu we saw at a breeder's show and could not walk away from...

hey, the last 2 i got were store dogs. the first one I went to get a housewarming gift for a friend, and i figured everyone buys the humans something, lets get their dog something. new house, he's probably freaking out a little. as I was online paying for a dogbed and some toys, this boxer comes running toward the door at full throttle, my girlfriend caught him, and that was it. He passed on due to cancer (fuck you cancer), and I miss him everyday. His brother I just got this past Christmas. I stopped to visit a friend who works at Shake a Paw Puppies, and as I'm sitting there shooting the shit, this couple brought in this boxer, saying they want to return him (they only had him for a week). They actually allowed them to return it because the couple stamped their feet saying the dog was aggressive. He's a puppy, furthermore hes a boxer puppy. So my friend put him back in the cage, and the poor thing looked miserable and screamed bloody murder, so I had to take him home. Needless to say, my girlfriend got an awesome christmas present.

There are so many great dogs out there waiting to be adopted. We have adopted 3, and they all turned out to be great family pets. Our first adopted dog, Wiley, was a year old when we got him. He grew up with my sons, and was all anyone could ask for in dog....loyal, protective of my boys, and a gentle giant. He passed back in 2013 at 12 years of age, and not a day goes by we don't think of him. Please strongly consider adopting.
