Just a few questions, as I'm looking to buy a used Tacoma. Don't know what I'll be buying yet, a 4cyl or 6. Also, is one engine better (last longer without issues) than the other? It will be an auto trans, and don't really need a 4x4, so it really doesn't matter (for me) about that. I've been looking at 1999's through 2002, with miles from 70K up to 150K. I'm just waiting to find "The Right One". Just need to know what known issues these may have around what mileage, so I know what to look for. Also, any other tips or advice would be helpfull.

I've been lurking arond this forum, and have read about the frame rust issue, timming belt replacement around 90K, O2 sensor, water pump. What does it cost to replace the timming belt, and the water pump...(about)...?

    Thanks...:D

Cost to replace all that depends on where you take it. Call your local dealership and ask them for a quote - it'll probably be the highest. Then call around and get quotes from garages. It'll probably be upwards of $500 or more.

My husband and I changed the water pump on our 3.4L and its not that bad.

Are you planning on buying a truck from a private sale or a dealer?
If you buy it from the dealer - you could 'bargain' and have them replace the timing belt & water pump as part of the sale.

I think the frame rust issue is probably your biggest concern when buying one of that age/mileage. To be honest, I'd recommend looking at 04 trucks and have it inspected by a dealer BEFORE you buy it. If an 04 truck fails the frame rust inspection, then they'll replace the frame and you get the truck back.
