I'm looking for a 2nd gen Tacoma, this will be my first truck ever so I'm totally new to this stuff. I found a 2006 Prerunner, SR5, alloy wheels with new tires, V6 automatic, very clean, carfax looks all good, and it has 137k miles. They're asking $15,500. KBB says thats a little high. What do you guys think? Is that way too much? If so, what would you say is a more reasonable price to shoot for? I'd appreciate any advice on this.

It probably needs head gaskets, keep that in mind. check coolant level and id recommend getting a long (2+hrs) coolant pressure test done to see if it's needed or not.

Huh? How did you come to that conclusion? I have 287,000 on mine, still purrs like a kitten.....it was a mechanical mess when I got her with 141,000, but the engine was good....needed struts and shocks, steering box bushings, sway bar bushings and end links, inner and outer tie rods, center support bearing and new tires before it was really roadworthy, plus I had to do some tinkering inside the cab to run down some rattles and squeaks and fix a funky seat that wouldn't stay up when you leaned back (all it was was some bolts that came loose, EZ fix with seat out)...the engine was just fine though as I mentioned.

OP, that price is high, I bought mine 6 years back for $5,500 cash money, a steal in my mind. I probably spent $1600 for parts and tires, did all the work myself except mounting the new tires. If it is clean, maybe $11,000 to $13,000 tops. These puppies hold their value rather well.

05, 06 and maybe 07 had an issue with bad head gaskets. Tons of threads on the subject on here. Bldegle2, i would guess that yours is newer. Or you're lucky, not saying ALL 05 and 06's have the issue, but a lot of them do.

Interesting, my sig has the year of mine, it is a 2000, seems to be bulletproof so far, but I don't abuse her...other than normal maintenance since original purchase and running down and fixing a terrible driveshaft vibration, basically a dream to own...

Honestly did not know about the head gasket issues.....thanks for the information...

Well, as I'm sure you probably know, you're 2000 has a totally different engine than the '05+ models. '05-'07.5 are know for having head gasket issues. That being said, I had an early 2007 model with 210k on it when I traded it. Never leaked a drop of coolant, and that truck had been abused hard.

I personally think that price is high, seeing as it's a Prerunner. :crapstorm:

I think 12.5-13.5k would be a good deal.

Your engine is totally different, being a 2000 so you wouldnt have that issue.

I got my 05 DCLB TRD Sport for 7500 but it needed the head gaskets like i said. OP, i also think that price is a little high for a pre-runner. talk em down and use the head gasket issue as ammo:infantry:!

Yeah, I know the engines are different (3.4/4.0), just didn't know about the head gasket issue....I was going to look for another Tacoma, was thinking 2006/2007, this information certainly has changed my thought process on the years I was considering...looks like 2008 to start...

To add another reference point. I bought my '05 DCSB TRD Off Road Pre-Runner with 97k miles for a little under $14k. It had 17" rims and 33" tires plus some other stuff that I was willing to pay a bit for.

Edit: That was this past May.

05 to beggining of 06 is the head gasket issue. Never seen anybody beyond that. They are the same with frame cracking.

Not a horrible price. Just not a great one either. I live near and work in Columbia and it's very hard to find a Tacoma around here. It's usually a 200k mile truck for $10k or almost new for $25k. Apparently people think they're made of gold. I just picked up a 2006 PreRunner AC V6/Auto w/142k miles for $10k. But in all fairness I work for a car dealership (not in sales or management :D) and we just happened to trade in exactly what I was looking for. So my price was better than most. If you could get them down to $13k, I think that would be a decent deal. I ran the carfax and it's a 1 owner, no accidents (at least according to carfax).
