I thought I would start a thread sharing my experience with buying out of state. I live in Southern California and for all of you who have attempted to buy in California have found a couple of things.

Dealers don't budge much off of msrp or dealers won't get the exact truck that you wanted.

Here is my journey that took me to Oregon and back to get my 2016.

I first tried using truecar as I had success using it in the past. Dealers would not honor their truecar price and would not try to order one in allocation for me since these trucks sell like hot cakes.

The next thing I tried was using USAA car buying service but they use a modified version of truecar and ran into the same dealers not wanting to deal on price.

The next thing I tried was emailing local dealers. No luck or no answer from most as them saw in the email that I was looking for invoice pricing.

The last thing I tried was emailing dealers out of state. This proved to be the way to go. I went through google maps searching for Toyota dealers and pasted the message that I was looking for pricing at invoice and the details of my truck. I received emails back from two different dealers. One in Arizona and one in Oregon agreeing to take my deal. After talking to both dealers the dealer in Oregon actually had a truck in allocation that was similar to what I wanted. The dealer gave me the estimated build date and an out the door price. The process went so smoothly I thought that at some point there had to be something that would go wrong. Nothing went wrong. I flew to Oregon from Ontario to Portland and Portland to Eugene. My salesperson picked me up from the airport and I was out of the dealership within 2 hours with my truck and on the road back home to California.

Once I got home there were a few things that I needed to do.

    1. Smog check $40
Although it is a 50 state truck California still requires it
    2. Weigh the truck $10
Had this done at a local truck stop
    3. Go to the dmv and pay my local taxes and registration $3300
Pretty easy process the dealer sent my title to my local dmv and payed the fees and left with my plates.

If anyone is looking for a deal pm me and I'll send you my dealers info. I do not work for the dealer and I'm not being compensated just am happy to pass along business to dealers who treat people the right way.

Good write up. Have some questions.

Did you have to pay any sales tax in Oregon. I am asking since you stated you had to pay $3300 CA tax.
How much money do you think you saved after paying transportation up to OR and the drive back and the $3,350 in CA for smog/etc.?

No sales tax in Oregon. The same would be true if you bought in another state. Say if I bought in Arizona where the tax was say 7% you would pay that and the difference to your dmv in my case I would have owed 1% since my local taxes are 8%. I flew up there for $140 on a Thursday and it took 2 tanks of gas so about $200 total. The smog and weighing was $50 so $250 total. I saved a couple thousand better than buying in SoCal

I bought across the state line in Indiana. I did have to pay sales tax but no dealer costs and I bought my truck for 2K under MSRP. I made the deal through email along with I told him how much I wanted for my trade-in and he said you got it. Talk to Ron Gooding. I highly recommend Uebelhor Toyota in Jasper, Indiana!

I didn't want to finance those costs so I payed them cash. My deal ended up being $2300 under msrp.

I went from Knoxville, TN. to Chicago, IL. and paid my $2,300 taxes when I got home....No taxes out of state...

Took a check and rented a one-way car for $125....$24 in gas....Cheap motel overnight on the way home....fast food.

Saved $2,000 off sticker and got what I was looking for.

    Try www.cars.com

You can select every option and color you want and it will narrow them down and show the dealers that have one....E-mail them....Some deal, most won't.

Great thread. Having the same issues in San Antonio, where we actually make the damn things. It will be funny to fly up to Colorado to buy a truck that was made here and to bring it back.

My truck was on a railroad 20 mins from my house headed to Oregon. Had to drive 14 hours back home. It was worth it though to give my local dealers the middle finger for not budging off of sticker price.

Just be careful of buying used car in California that's new... it has to be 7500 miles above...or some stupid rule like that...I think new cars are okay.

I don't remember. The weight of the truck is on the original paperwork from the dealership but it needs to be verified by a weigh station for some reason.

    I did the same thing.
The dealers here in OK were not willing to deal very much so I turned to the Internet and
found the exact truck I wanted in Colorado for $200 under invoice.

I called up the dealership (which were very helpful) put down a deposit, and booked a South West flight to Denver for $100.

A salesman picked me up at the airport and I was headed home in about 2 hours.

I did pay Oklahoma sales tax when I picked up the truck, but I'd have to pay that anyway (the dealership forwarded the tax collected to the OK Tax Commission).

All in all very nice experience.

    Cheers

For some reason the number 4,300 pounds sticks in my head.

Yeah I don't remember the exact number but my DCSB 4x4 manual transmission was above 4000. Somewhere between 4000 and 4400.
