I just found out today I'm changing stations and moving to California in July. I know I want a Tacoma and I'm doing my homework so I can make an informed purchase. My only issue is I have no idea about Cali emission laws. Do I have to buy a California compliant model? Are there any issues if I buy a used truck? Can I buy a truck out of state and operate it in Cali without any issues? Thanks- Jared

All of the Tacomas are california compliant... I bought my truck in arizona and brought it over here. I did have to jump through some hoops because bringing a truck is more a pain in the ass then bringing a car. I had to get it weighed, inspected, smogged and so on.

Did you buy your truck new or used? I'm looking at both options. I don't want to buy a used truck, it fail an inspection, and have to fork over big $$ for cats or some other issue I'm not aware of.

Whatever you do, borrow a camper shell from someone before you take it down there. Make sure you note it and tell them it's on there- otherwise you'll be charged a Weight Fee.

Like Cali literally fucking charges for gravity by the pound.
The loophole is this camper shell. With the camper shell upon first registration, it makes your truck classified slightly differently and in the eyes of the state, excludes you from other trucks that could be used for commercial purposes - thus the weight fee.

It's not much, but it'll cut your registration fees down which are bloody awful here.
I'm leaving the state for crap like this and at the very least I'm gonna register my truck in AZ soon till I actually move out.
    Good luck!

I should also note that anyone at the DMV
    .... Well you'll find out.
You're gonna have to be very adamant about the shell if they charge you a weight fee. Don't let em do it.

I bought it used from carmax. A lot of states adopted california emissions as their own so to my knowledge, All Tacomas from factory are the same with the same emissions systems.

LMAO- Thanks for the insider info man. This is exactly the type of info I was looking for. I'm from Louisiana, and if it has a windshield, a seat belt, and four wheels it will pass an inspection.

If you are military, keep it registered in your state of legal residence . Fuck California and their stupid rules.

Legal and perfectly fine for the military.

Because military members may have "legal residence" in one state, but be stationed in a different state, the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act of 1940, allows military members to pay taxes, register vehicles, vote, etc., in their "state of legal residence," rather than the state they are stationed in.

^^^This. Fuck California, I brought in my previous truck and my current Taco and pay that BS weight fee. I love that I drive a "Commercial" vehicle because I bought a small truck. lol

Don't get me started on the amazing imaginary taxes CA charges like the "Smog Impact Fee" I got dinged with once. Ultimately the state had to pay back everyone who paid that because it was illegal to charge for such nonsense.

If you do this, you will have to leave the shell on the truck FOREVER! DMV will classify the truck as a "PM" (Permanently mounted camper) and issue you passenger car plates-1ABC234 instead of commercial plates-12345A7. If you take the shell off for any reason, you can not transport anything (even a 6-pack) in the bed of the truck. You will get stopped (maybe not for a while, but it will happen) and get cited for a violation of 9400 CVC. The listed weight fees for unladen weight between 3000 and 4000 lbs is $24.00/year. My '09 has a unladen weight of 3625lbs. For $24, it's not worth the trouble.

Any questions, send me a PM.

^ Exactly what Ray and JimmyH said. F--- Cali registration fees. I recently had my vehicle reclassified by doing all the paperwork at the DMV. I have a 4x4 which put me into the $80.00 annual weight fee category. After paying it for three years I said enough was enough. Now no weight fee!

Beat me to it. I spent six years stationed in Cali and always kept my vehicles registered in AK--including cars I bought in CA. I had dealerships give me a ration of shit trying to force me to pay for CA reg telling me that it's the law there, but I quoted them this act (which they knew nothing about) and they backed down. Keep your driver's license in your home state too.

How fucked up can one state be? VERY!

My opinion of California sinks even lower. I didn't think that was possible, but I was wrong.

I"m an Oregon resident. Turns out when I went in the Navy they don't take state income tax out if you are active service, not sure if its still that way.... add that to the previous info posted about NOT getting Cali registration. Just something to think about. Yes Oregon has no sales tax either.

This law isn't new. If you look, it was enacted in 1959!
