Im wanting to upgrade my wifes camera possibly for Christmas. Right now she has a canon powershot point and shoot i think thats right. We have a little girl that will be 2 years old in january. Her current camera is slow at taking pics and a 2 year olds face and actions change really quick. Im not sure if she needs a dslr or a good upgrade for her would be a csc camera. One that has the interchangable lenses. Could someone point me in the right direction? Not wanting to spend over $550.

    The fun has just begun.
Look at the Nikon d3100, d3200. It's a dslr base and around your budget.

Yeah the 3200 i think which ever has the 24mp is the one my brother has. He likes his a lot. I saw the csc cameras and was wondering if theses are a big upgrade. I think the nikon j3 ould be a good one with the 10-100 mm lens. Any difference besides size?

I would definitely get a DSLR. The Nikon D3200 is good. The 18-55mm lens that comes with it is decent. Eventually, you'll want better lenses and Nikon makes the best. You could get a used D90 in your price range, but it is much bigger and heavier.

I was just in a similar situation as you with a newborn. We ended up getting a Canon Rebel T3 and love it. We got it factory refurbished through Cannon for under $400 if I'm remembering correctly. It takes great pictures and is user friendly. I mostly use the basic point and shoot type options but I have been messing with some of the more advanced settings also.

Look into the Dyson DC50 or the LG LRE3023st. Both perfect options for the wife.

Check out the new Canon G16. I have the G12 and it is a great camera. The G16 has big improvements over the G12 in auto focus speed and accuracy, low light capabilities as well as an improved frame rate.

What kind of memory card? Put a class 10 card in if you don't have one, makes a huge difference.

I'm in the same boat budget wise looking for a Dslr for the gf. Would y'all chose the Nikon d3200 or the canon t3i? And is the canon 75-300 mm lens worth 50$?

I prefer Nikon over Canon. I think Nikon makes better lenses than Canon and the overall image quality and build quality of the entry-level Nikon DSLRs are better than the Canon entry-level DSLRs.

That depends on your intended use. If you are doing a lot of portrait shooting, a good prime lens, either 35mm or 50mm in f/1.4 or f/1.8 would be good. If you are shooting wildlife outdoors, you need long focal lengths, so a 70-300mm zoom would work well. For versatile indoor use, a medium zoom like 18-105mm would work great. For sports, you would benefit from a big zoom range, say 70-300mm in a fast lens like an f/2.8. Nikon makes a 28-300mm which could be a good all around lens.

I've been looking a lot yesterday and this morning as well and I still can't decide which would be the best for her. I like the idea of having a dslr and then we wouldn't have to probably buy another camera for a very long time. I think the thing I worry or am concerned about is the bulkyness of the dslr vs the point and shoot she has now. We probably don't use half of the settings on her camera now except the AUTO. I think all she wants is to be able to have a better zoom (where you don't have to have a steady hand when zooming in at long distances), quicker picture taking, and of course better pic quality. She carries her camera in her purse but I doubt she will be able to with either option. I'm kinda stuck and don't know what to do. I mean the nikon j3 isn't much cheaper than the nikon d3200. Maybe she would use it more if we had a better camera.

You are not going to get these things from a point and shoot. When you use them (DSLR and PaS) side by side you will understand the differences, especially the speed. There's nothing more frustrating that trying to shoot moving subjects with a point and shoot.

Yeah she takes a pic and then have to wait for it to store the pic and sometimes if our little girl moves while taking a pic, it comes out all blurry. Are the mirrorless/csc cameras a lot better than she has now? I know the DSLR would be superior to all. Just trying to figure out which would be best for her needs and what she uses them for.
