The oil filter on my '09 Tacoma is one of the small (short) types. There looks like plenty of clearance to replace it with a longer filter. I was going to do this on the next oil change but I'm not sure how to determine which filter will thread on as it should. Anyone done this with success? thanks for any info/input.

Yes you can install a larger filter, but you will need to adjust the oil fill to make up for the larger volume.

This is what I would recommend: Toyota tall filter from the dealer is pn# 90915-YZZD3.

    Here is a good listing:

You can, but unless you're frequently pushing your engine extra hard there's no reason to.

Most run the Toyota d3 and are perfectly content. Some are so content they’ll close their minds to anything different suggested.

Apparently, you and I have similar brains. I’ve tried a few different things, never tried a d3.

Napa 1516, same as a wix 51516. It’s taller and larger in diameter. I’ve used it a few times, it didn’t leak, my engine didn’t blow up. 4.8” tall, 2.9” diameter.

Baldwin B2, it’s way bigger and taller. It barely fits, so close that there’s not enough room to get your finger nail in between the bottom lip of the filter and inner edge of the filter mount. I bought 3, one was just barely bigger on that bottom lip & wouldn’t begin to screw on. Luckily I had another 1516 in my garage. Oh yeah, it didn’t leak, my engine didn’t blow up. 5.4” tall, 3.68 diameter.

NAPA 1773, same as a Wix 51773. This is going in next. 6.9” tall, 3.66” diameter. I put it up to the b2 that didn’t fit. All these dimensions I provided are from Napa & Baldwin web sites, one of them isn’t right because the diameter difference is way more than 0.02”. It’ll be my first time using this filter so I can only hope it doesn’t leak and my engine doesn’t blow up.

The only filters I would avoid are anything that says fram on it and the stubby shorter filters. I have seen filters leak. At where I work, they bought a batch during supply chain Covid issues. They just said Korea and a part number, no other information, they all leaked.

Thank you all. I did find the Toyota yzzd3. I'm going to try them.

I use a YZZD3. Never found anything bigger that matches required specs. It may be possible but I don’t know if it’s needed given 5k OCI and capacity of 5.5qt.

Not sure if there’s any bigger lower oil pans that offer more capacity.

there at one point was such product but it was very expensive and I believe only fit xrunners and may have reduced ground clearance.

I don’t think you’d need a new oil pan to run a filter with an additional 1 cup of oil capacity bro

I’ve used Mobile1 M1-209A on my 4.0L since the 2nd oil change and I’ve got 192K miles. I change it with Mobile1 5W-30 every 3000-5000 miles. I don’t notice filing with much more oil than the 5.5 quarts it says. Probably a half cup more oil than stock filter.

I also use the YZZD3 from Toyota. They are inexpensive, high quality, and work great. Almost 260k miles on my 2009, no engine issues whatsoever using this filter and a 4500-5000 mile oil change interval for years.
