I may be wrong, but aren't the TRD filters the same as K&N? They sure look the same including the nut on the end.

Edit. According to bobstheoilguy they are the same.

Yes, both are made by Champion Labs. The Japanese and Thailand filters are different from the US built versions.
Champion Labs builds them only difference is the media thickness from my understanding. Still a 40 micron absolute I believe was the rating.
Cheapo Motorcraft filter actually filters better.

Performance filters typically are high flow AKA less filtration.

I went and bought the Mobil 1 equivalent of the XG8A (M1-301) and once I go through the other new Mobil 1 stock filter I'll give it a try. I run Amsoil signature but haven't had the balls to try and really go much past 5000 miles with the M1 filter. With the bigger filter and Amsoil signature I would bet 10,000 miles between oil and filter changes would be very doable. Amsoil says 15,000 miles and up to 25,000 and Mobil 1 says 15,000 for their filters. I just don't have the balls to go 15,000 but I might try 10,000. I'll be getting some oil samples done to watch what happens when I start going past 7500.

    Thread revival lol.

I've pushed M1 5W-30 to 9000 miles before with no ill effects. The oil can take it. Amsoil in my opinion is over rated. M1 will do the job just fine and cheaper on the pocket book. As for myself I've gone to 0W-40 Wichita is just a touch thicker than 5W-30 and the truck is loving it. The M1 301 filter is a good filter just a bit pricy for my tastes. I avoid all WIX oil filters these days as I know multiple people that have had engine failures due to a filter disintegrating or the adhesives failing and clogging up oil passages.

Don't be afraid of running 7500 with M1 5W-30 it holds up well.

I used Mobil 1 exclusively for 15 years. The reason I don't use it any longer has nothing to do with it's quality. That's for sure. As for the reason? This isn't a forum for that type of discussion. Far too political and it would take pages and pages to explain so I'm not going there. Amsoil is real good stuff and so I use it. As far as price I haven't checked the price difference for a long time but the last time I did I'm getting Amsoil Signature for about the same price as Mobil 1 Extended. The difference in price isn't a concern for me at this point in time because it really isn't that much different.

I will tell you an Amsoil story though. Up until about 3 years ago my only car was a 1973 Cadillac Coupe Deville. I owned it for 18 years and drove it all over the country. At 80+ mph when ever I could get away with it. The best car I ever owned and a blast to drive. In any case. When I had the engine rebuilt shortly after I bought it. Not the Caddy's fault. An incompetent mechanic's fault. I broke it in and was running dino in it. The shop I worked at who also rebuilt the engine was an Amsoil dealer. When I switched from the dino to Amsoil after 20,000 miles my idle RPM went up 200rpm and I had to re-adjust it. That told me something about Amsoil. Shortly after that because I moved across the country I switched to Mobil 1 and ran that for 15+ years in that car. Mobil 1 15-50 to be exact until I ended up where it pretty really cold. I did use the 15-50 down to 10 degrees though and the car was outside all the time.

Personally, I think Mobil 1 is just as good as Amsoil for just about every application but Amsoil was in the synthetic business first so they must know something at this point in time. The fact of the matter is that for every 10 Mobil 1 enthusiasts there are 10 Amsoil enthusiasts and 10 Penzoil Platinum enthusiasts. They are all VERY good oils and they are certainly not the only choices out there. Prices are all within a buck or two of eachother unless you go with a premium boutique from a very small company.
