Just deflate the old tires... None of us deflated (as far as I know) for Diablo... and while the three 2WDs had to work hard, only the one white DC needed my help getting to the top. If he dropped to 15 psi, I bet he could have made it.

    Yea i didnt deflate either.
David, i know you love the dynapro's! but they are better tires for 4x4. dont have enough grab, and not strong enough to withstand the chewing from spinning tires up things..

My tires are all chunked up now

Right, they are an All Terrain tire... not an off road tire. I don't want to buy different tires for different uses at the same time... so I need a tire that is highway friendly (95% of my driving) and works good off road.

With four wheel drive, spinning is reduced or elimimated as we don't usually need to rev up, but use our traction aids to climb stuff. That saves tire wear and also doesn't make roads worse by creating deeper ruts.

Congrats, RJ. I've got some work to do on a TW member's truck this weekend and am running low on gas or I'd join you and David at Cleghorn. I bet it will be tons of fun especially with your new tars. It's been too long since I've seen some dirt roads...

Anywho! Lockers! I was planning on buying one for my 2WD, but I might just end up waiting to throw the locker on my future 4WD... But then having a real rear-2WD would be nice too... Any thoughts? Would an old 1984-1990 4x benefit much from a locker?

Any 2WD or 4WD open differential will benefit from a locker if you plan on going off road... steep climbs, deep ruts where one tire can leave the ground, deep mud, etc.

Hmmm so which should I put it in since I like to offroad them both? I imagine the 4WD would benefit more since I'll be doing much more extreme stuff with it. Might be cheaper for an older vehicle as well?

Stick on hood scoop from Autozone.
Sure, it'll keep up on a lot of trails. But if you're so concerned about it, stop spending money on your PreRunner and save up that money to trade in for a 4x4.

I have gotten stuck many times in 4WD. It's the open diff. The locker or A-TRAC gets me unstuck.

You should read more of my posts, too... :D;)

I have yet to not get out of a stuck with A-TRAC... a locker is also a big plus if you don't get an A-TRAC equipped Tacoma.

When my 2010 Tacoma was pretty new, my wife (a long time CJ-5 Jeep owner, and Rubicon runner) and I went into a really deep rutted area of grove roads not far from here (Panda Jerk's Drug Airport/ Welk Run area)...

On a steep climb I got high centered on the rear diff. and spare tire... Both rear tires were over ruts and not touching the ground... the rear locker was useless in this case. I was pointed up hill and the front tires were not on the most solid ground... rutted road.

If I only had standard 4WD, with the weight and drag resistance, just one of my front tires would have spun and I would need to build a road under my tires!

I said, "well let's see just how well A-TRAC works"... and gave the gas pedal a push... The A-TRAC directed power to the one good front tire (instead of just to the loose, spinning tire), and pulled my truck uphill out of the high centered stuck. Both my wife and I were totally stoked at this truck's abilities... and it has proven itself many times since.

Yah, I would say that A-TRAC is best used on difficult trails and not "easy" ones.

The 2WDs use momentum (and good tires, lift kit, etc.) to bonzaii over steep or rough places.

The 4WDs use traction assistance to slowly, safely and without damage drive over steep or rough places.

So for you to be using the ATRAC, you are also in Low Range... 2WDs don't have Low Range, so by comparrison you were the turtle and they were the rabbits running all around.

Low Range and A-TRAC are for the most extreme conditions and they allow you to crawl slowly and safely over the worst terrain, by design.

They are not for a "super easy obstacle".

Next time, try in in H2 and try AUTO LSD as well as TRAC and open diff.

Off Road Race trucks are typically locked 2WDs... and they go fast! They do get stuck sometimes in silt and sand... and the slower, 4WD will go right past them.

I have your setup and have only gotten stuck twice. Deep in mud. My friend has a grand cherokee with a 2" lift 4x4 and he got stuck in my ruts because of his front axle. Just throw sometires under yahh and youll have some ground clearnce.

I've had mine out to almost redline in 5th gear/4-low many times; no problems. 4-low gives you a nice closely-spaced bunch of ratios, like 3 firsts & 2 seconds. :D I have a 4-cyl., so I need the gear reduction more than a V6 would.
