    no wonder...

One time this guy was in the middle of the road and I tried to slow down but it was tough. To increase stopping power I downshifted to 4 and slammed on my brakes. I heard a thud and the guy disappeared...it all makes sense now. you learn something new everyday.

This is true - don't shift into the 4-D gear unless you want to open up the 4th dimension. It's crazy, and you can only come back if you shift into 2-L which stands for 2nd-Labyrinth. It's in the manual.

No. You are right. Lower gears provide engine braking.

Reminds me of the time we followed a Suburban towing a heavy trailer over a pass in WV. The idiot driving the truck did not do this. On the down hill side of the pass I started to smell brake linings. A little further and I could see whisps of smoke coming from the Suburban's wheel wells. the smoke grew until it was billowing from the Suburban. I'll bet his/her rotors were shaped like Pringles potato chips by the time they cooled. A lower gear would have helped prevent that. (Probably needed trailer brakes too.)

A friend of mine bought a used Nissan Armada. He took me for a drive and showed me that moving the transmission lever from "D" to "4" was how you engage 4wd.
After telling him he was wrong and him arguing with me, we stopped and I looked underneath the truck. No transfer case, front drive shaft, or front CV's!

He still argues with me today about how he read the manual and he has a 4wd.

That is hilarious. So what happens when he drops it into third? Does a wheel pop off?

Haha. I wonder if there's ever been a vehicle that has the 4WD shift on the gear shift lever.

5th gear which is what our automatics stop at is considered our overdrive...allowing us to stay at our cruising speed with minimal effort from our engine. If you slide the shifter over into 4 (4th gear) you are simply eliminating the use of overdrive. Try it you will notice that at your normal cruising speed, your RPM's will be slightly higher than normal. Also xmixpixx got it right...most people use it for towing to keep the truck from switching back and forth between gears.

What ever you do don't put it into first - it'll blow off half the car like in batman, except at the end you will be pedaling away in a unicycle.

Sometimes it's fun to shift from L through D.
Gives you something to do in an automatic. ;)

Psch. N is for noobs. D is where it's at. N just makes a shitload of noise and I'm pretty sure it lowers my horsepower.

I can floor it in D for hours nonstop.

If I remember correctly you just purchased a used 07. I don't mean no disrespect here, but if your truck didn't come with an owners manual you should look into getting one, or maybe download it. There's alot of really good information about the automatics shifting points and when to use them. :)
