2004 Tacoma Double Cab

Hi all,
New here and looking to cap my 2004 double cab with a 5' short bed. I'm having a helluva time finding a used topper in this exact model, but have found a couple later models. I know that you can't fit a pre-2005 cap on a post-2005 bed, but is the opposite also true? Or can I still get a workable fit out of a cap designed for a later model?

OC California

2004 is Gen1 and 2005-2015 is 2nd Gen with totally different bed sizes.
