So my buddy likes the practicality of my new truck but wants to go beyond that. He wants to ditch his 94 Tercel off on his sister and get something else. His stipulations are preferably 4WD or AWD, something he can sleep in, not a V8 and under $4k. So far he has shown interest in Subbie wagons, Jeep Cherokees, the original convertible 4Runner, any old truck with a cap, old Volvo and BMW wagons, and the Toyota Dolphin.

    Suggestions? Got anything for sale?

Advantage Torza top (tri-fold), Husky floor mats, RuffTuff seat covers, C2C hood struts, Homelink mirror, USA Spec PA15-Toy (120gig Classic & 8gig nano), Garmin Nuvi 660, Protecta Bed mat, Pop-n-lock, TSB Springs, Scangauge II, Heated drivers seat, Fumoto drain valve, Aries pushbar, PIAA 540 fog lights, Hood scoop grahics, Flowmaster 50 series dual catback exhaust, RainX Latitude windshield wipers, Husky rear floor liner (ontop of folded down seats). Console Vault.
When you're talking only $4000 worth - you could wind up with anything. Hopefully the guy has a lot of mechanical skills and can work on it. Cuz chances are, they'll all need it regardless of what he gets.

    Not sure about Subbie's....
Jeep Cherokees are a dime a dozen these days. You could probably find a 2000 Cherokee for $4k or under if you look hard enough. But you're probably talking over 100k miles and some tranny work possibly. A newer Cherokee will be free of rust cancer (for the most part).

The older 4Runners that are convertible - you're talking 80's. And although they're strong in engine/tranny, they're gonna have lots of rust cancer.

A 90's Toyota truck would be good - strong in engine/ tranny but you might find one that has strong frame/body (in terms of rust)

He isn't very mechanical but inclined to learn. He would be under my tutelage as an auto body repairman/ mechanic/ mech. engineer.

I've owned several Legacy wagons in the past and am familar with their few flaws and maintenance.
I knew of the rust/cancer of the older 4Runners but would be optimistic pending an underbody inspection.
I also know that the Cherokees have some engine and tranny problems but he found a good deal on a 74k one with minor body damage and around $2500.
I would love to see him in 90s Toy truck with a cap.

He put himself through college and is grad school now working 2 jobs. He is a hard worker and plays even harder. The car doesn't have to beautiful or perfect but reliable, cheap and practical.

    Thanks for your input, Janster!

80's 4runners are good, Jeep Cherokees are great! I cant say enough about them, they run forever, just make sure it has an asian tranny(pre2002?) and newer than 93(updated cooling system) cheap solid axle rig

Early to mid 90's 4runners are out there in that price range. You've just got to expect high mileage and probably some TLC is needed. I would imagine the same goes for the Subarus. There are a few listings on C.R. for early 90's Toyota 4x4 trucks.

I'm thinking the one my mom had leaned toward the lemon side. It was overly problematic. It was when the miles were up there too.

But seriously, he should be able to find a decent Cherokee Classic pretty cheap or something similar to it. They are all over the place. If a Jeep get the 4.0 straight six, iron block motor. It might leak but it'll run, has decent torque.
