Those were interesting cars for sure. As I recall, you could even order one with a V6 and a manual transmission.

On the subject of oddball cars discovered in junkyards, I once stumbled onto an '85 Lincoln Continental with a BMW-built turbo diesel inline 6 under the hood.
I don't have any pictures, though.

Nice. That one is the more deluxe Gordini model.

Some of the originals went to National Union Electric Corporation, Henney Motor Co and Exide Batteries for EV conversion.

The second generation, though, featured an improved 72-volt battery pack with a top speed of nearly 100 km/h (60mph) and a range of about 100 km (60 miles).

They were better than a VW from that era. Better handling manners than a Corvair.

They just needed the 75 HP motor out of an R10 to give it some power.

Correct, it was a Gordini, My father put a cam and a bigger carburetor on it and also made a device with a motorcycle brake lever and a cable to be able to lift or lower the rear hood and control the air to manage the temperature, I remember me seating right in the middle of the back seat to achieve 65 mph (110 km/h) on the freeway.
I wanted to bring it to the states and do something fun with it but life happened.
They are beautiful ( in my opinion) once you fix it a little bit, like this one,5AC527CB-F725-4202-8BD3-3E987FE025CF.jpg

I’d like to know... who was the guy that one day said to the company execs “hey, let’s put the license plates on the side now!” And which execs said “wow, great idea!”

Here are a few that may have been listed, but I'm not looking through 37 pages.

    280px-Colt_1_12-26-2009.jpg
1989 Dodge Colt. Some weird collaboration with Mitsubishi. My first car. It was black and I think it was like $800 with 150k on it. I was daydreaming about trout fishing in the spring of 1999 and rear ended someone and totaled it.

1988-Dodge-Omni-630x390.jpg Late 80's Dodge Omni. Had a 5 speed manual in college and it would scoot pretty good. Paid $395 cash for it in about 2001-2002. Sold it to my brother and he blew the engine up on a long road trip.

    052817-1987-Nissan-Sentra-4WD-Hatchback-1-630x420.jpg
Mid to late 80's Nissan Sentra 4wd wagon. My cousin had one. I decided to ride on the hood of it one day and he locked up the brakes, throwing me off the hood and breaking my arm. It got stolen when his mom took it to church. Someone got hammered drunk in it, took it mudding, and left it trashed and stuck out a road called Devil's Backbone when we were kids.

My brother had an old Ford escort he paid $75 for. It was easily the most shit car I ever rode in.

It would have been someone at Ford while Lee Iacocca was still there. 1972 Continental.

The Colt you have pictured is actually an 88. They changed the hatch in 89. I know... I also had one. Paid $800 for it. We used to take it to an old defunct shopping plaza late at night and do drunk autocross.

This looks exactly like mine did.

RIP my all original Trekker :) The best part about building it was when I cut the rear fiberglass tub up I ended up with some “factory Toyota-Winnebago” fiberglass bedsides!

You are correct. I had so many shitty late 80's model cars, I can't remember which ones were which exact model years.
