So I replaced the spark plugs in my 2trfe this past weekend, and noticed my truck sounded different (deeper)after i test drove it. Then that afternoon i had my tires rotated and balanced. Well the next day I began to notice a rattle/ricer sound above 3500rmp, then it went away after a few hours. Well today I was getting on the on -ramp which was up hill, and lost almost all power. The hill wasn't all that steep just a long gradual incline and I was in 3rd gear, floored holding 45mph and my truck was making a deep growling bogging down noise. Stopped at the parts store and put a new air filter in because the one I was using was absolutely filthy, and that helped it out. But I can still tell something isn't right. So my dad put his hand over the tail pip while engine running and my converter started rattling again.

I'm wondering if something could be inside there blocking the exhaust path at times. Its also funny when i do this maintenance work , that this problem arises all of the sudden.

    Thoughts? Thanks

Cats probably plugged or coming apart. I just had a similar problem on my '97, pulled the cat and all the inards were busted up and tryin to go down the exhaust plugging it off.

My 2013 I4 was rattling on and off, but I always have my windows up and I could never get a recording. Yesterday I finally got to record with my phone. Cat fail, new one today. 31.5K. In and out in a few hours!

OK thanks for the input. Never got a check engine light, and the power is back to normal now as far as I can tell, and I'm pretty sure the cat came apart inside because it just rattles now. 125k miles

Finally got code p0420 today. Where is the best place to order a new converter? Has anyone ever used a universal one?

If you are under 8yrs and 80,000 miles it should be under the emissions warranty.

If you are in a stable like CA or Mass, you have a 15/150,000 or so warranty on the cats as they are carb states.

    Thats crazy.
my taco is also a 2013 I4, only has 29k miles and i started hearing this rattling noise last week. Finally told myself this is not normal so I went under the vehicle to find where the noise is coming from. Definitely coming from the catalytic converter. It wasnt the heat shield, it sounded more inside. So since under warranty, i brought it to the dealership this morning and they all heard the noise and got a call from the advisor saying they ordered the parts and will replace it tomorrow.

I had the shop cut my California cat off since I live across the country. Just the magnaflow, sounds a little different. Can't tell a power difference, and no the check engine light didn't come on

I just had my cat start rattling like nuts today on my 2013 2tr.... going for warranty check tomorrow... I'm hoping all goes well - I tore the heathshield off thinking it was the culprit.

Also happened to me around 30K...heard rattle, got worse and worse...took to dealer, said it was breaking up inside and replaced it for free.

I am very very surprised the 2013 doesn't have at least a TSB for it yet... too many cats are blowing out at only 30k.. WTF

    Mike blew at 12k miles.

My current has similar rattle at high RPM that I hear occasionally.

Another member on here has had 2 cats fail with his 2.7 and I think he is under 30k.

Any idea as to why 2.7L Taco's eat these suckers...they're expensive to replace after the warranty goes out.

At the rate they fail I shouldn't have to worry about it not being under warranty.
