Yeah , when CHP catches your then sends you to a smog ref , I’ll buy your truck as a play toy...I watched my buddies 450hp evo get that treatment and I was close to that treatment...we both now , drive stock trucks..not worth messing with smog equipment ...

you sound like one of those folks who reminds everyone an FCC license is required to operate a ham radio.

thinking about this thread and wondering if the catch can naysayers are the same ones that are like, 'trans is a sealed system. no need to change the fluid EVER!'

Or you just bought into a piece of equipment that’s meant for race cars... like I said I’ll buy your pos when you get caught up and check engine light won’t go away... don’t let this “do sayer” let you fail smog check... lawless or brainless you decide....

What is this "smog" you speak of? I pay a $24 safety inspection here in Tejas.

Go back and read the first post and thread title man. Why was this thread even started. To show us dumb hick fools that a catch can (never mind that no OEM manufacturers use one on NA engines) is smart and unless you run one you are the scum of the earth.
I got news. They are useless. If you want to run one, then by all means go for it. Just don't post a thread telling me I am an idiot for not running one. I happen to agree with every design engineer ever. The OP doesn't. The crap pictures of what are collected in the cans are no representation of what goes through the engine. It's mostly condensation from the catch can! Run one for 100K, take the engine apart and post pics. Then run one without it for a 100K, take the engine apart and post pics. Until I see that picture then it means nothing.

looking forward to my next smog check.

that's not how i read the first post at all. i though the idea was to make a place where people who do not believe there is a benefit to have a safe space to discuss their views.

And is blow back oil and the oil in your pan any different ? Nope!
I would think if I had that metal flakes in my blow back oil that the rest of the oil is just as compromised. I got bigger problems ...

Just tinkering with assumptions and numbers here:

    Assumptions:
    1) you collected about an ounce of condensed oil/water vapor over 1500 miles of driving

    2) you averaged 50 mph at 2000 rpms over those 1500 miles

    3) no idle time
    ---------------------------------------------

    1500 miles / 50 mph = 30 hrs running time

    2000 rpm x 60 min/hr = 120,000 rev. per hour

120,000 rev. per hr. x 30 hrs run time = 3.6 million revolutions over 1500 miles

Each cylinder has one 1 intake stroke per 2 revolutions so:

3.6 million revs per 1500 miles / 2 revs = 900,000 intake strokes per cylinder per 1500 miles

1 ounce of oil & water vapor / 900,000 intake strokes = 0.000001 ounces per intake stroke per cylinder over 1500 miles, or the equivalent of 0.000006 teaspoons

This is overly simplified and inaccurate, since in a V6 there are cylinders that are going through intake strokes at varying degrees in each revolution. But hopefully it gives perspective, as I think some people are imagining all of that crud going through the engine in much larger amounts. Given that Toyota thought this whole issue through and included port injection AND a self cleaning function, the detergents in gasoline are very very likely to clean off the miniscule amounts of oil/water that may attach to the intake valves.

Too much overthinking....keeps oil build up out of intake and even with port injection, some coking on valves can occur. I am one who prefers the use of a catch can to keep those components clean, and a catch can is a super cheap way to do it imo.

For whatever reasons, word OIL gets some people in a hype. I propose to replace the word OIL with ENGINE LUBRICATION and call the device:
ENGINE LUBRICATION and VAPOR CONDENSATION CATCH CAN .
    Now everybody will buy one.

Three years old, 35k miles, my truck. Never had the intake tube off, always replaced the air filter with OEM at 12k.

This oil left a trail into the throttle body and tb flapper.

This is the residual stuff that a proper catch can will collect before it goes into the intake and the throttle body.
