Magnet mount or Firestik?I keep reading conflicting posts that magnet mounts aren"t "ground plane" per se and that firestiks don"t get out as far mounted in the truck bed...thoughts?

I have a 6ft firestick on a spring with 1.1 SWR mounted to my passenger side Total chaos bed stiffener. I have confirmed 7mi communications with it inside The Woodlands. If you’re getting into coms, save top of the roof for HAM antenna magnet mount.

Where’d you get a 6’ firestik?? I’ve seen 2’, 3’ and 4’. Never knew about the 6’ but now want one.

I think Amazon. Mine is a wire top not a screw top. So tuning is a little more involved. You might consider a 5’ screw top with spring and quick detach (both from firestik). I have a military surplus antenna tie down I use for parking garages and stuff but I paid $10 for it. Now they go for like $50.

There are tons of different mount options available.

If I had to go roof mount for CB I’d go with this mount. WILSON 305-38 300-Watt Little Wil Magnet Mount Antenna https://amzn.to/2Rk7mBO

I have a Wilson 1000 magnetic roof mount long antenna. I have a great SWR 1.1 on 1, 20, 40. With that I had some custom radio work done on my Galaxy 959 by Snake River Customs if I remember correctly.

This is the 6ft Antenna I have
This is the Spring that I have it mounted on

If you go 5ft you can add quick disconnect

Next Ham radio will be this one - Midland 5001z (currently on sale I think $30 off) Has a lot of great internal features. I just need more gain and squelch controls than the one I currently have. Uniden Pro505XL For $30 it's not bad at all. I can reach out 7mi in the woods (I've confirmed that). But sometimes you just can't get the noise out as it's pretty basic. Great for on the trail and budget stuff but I've grown out of it already.

But dont forget it's all about your SWR. Please don't forget to tune your antenna and pick up an SWR meter.
