Damn, I was really hoping to see a 980 install around here. I'm thinking I really want the SSB when I upgrade trucks/radios, but WX is the main use of my current radio.

How do you tune your antenna? I'm really liking this idea since it looks like the tailgate jam mount isn't going to fly on a 3rd gen.

Same way you would tune any antenna, SWR meter and either cut or slightly lengthen the rod as needed.

Has anyone mounted a radio under the steering wheel in a gen 3? I've got a Cobra 29 in that position now on my '04 and it doesn't get in my way (pretty good sized radio too, 8 3/4" X 7 1/2" X 2 1/4"). I haven't seen anyone do that around here so I'm curious if there are some controls down there it might cover up (tilt/telescope?).

Shouldn't cove up the telescopic/ tilt. But for me I'd bang my leg getting in and. Also mines a manual so don't know how that would work. Was gonna use a galaxy 98vhp radio with 200 watts but now I just ordered a ranger 2970N4 with 400 watts. Thinking of mounting under a seat.

I assume you mean on the Gen 3s? I'm almost positive there isn't on Gen 1s, but I installed that almost 5 years ago, so my memory could be fuzzy.

Man that may not impede your legs but I would absolutely hate to get in a front end collision (or even whack a deer) and have my knees get jammed into that.

Ok... So I'm completely new to CB's and decided to jump in. I liked all the features of this thing... Screenshot_2017-03-08-06-33-09.jpg
So that's what I ended up buying.
    I also purchased these items
    Screenshot_2017-03-08-06-32-50.jpg
This the link for the antenna. Please let me know what you guys think.

I'll be fabricating my own mount on the back beside the tailgate.
Please let me know any comments/foreseeable issues/suggestions.

I bought the same CB but I found its way to big to install anywhere in the truck so I bought the President Johnny III.

This is my current set up

I can mount the tablet either lower or most likely higher than the current position and install the Cb like a single din head unit above my actual stereo

That's a nice radio. I don't have any experience with SSB use as well as the clarifier controls, but eventually plan on getting a unit with SSB capability. I don't know if you know this, but for SSB use, the receive end needs to be on SSB as well when in use. The benefits for SSB is the 12W output for sure vs 4W, but again, both parties need to be in SSB "mode", if you will.

Then I remember hearing about "tuning" using the clarifier. That is about the extent of my knowledge with SSB, which is why I want to get a radio with SSB capability and learn. Other than that, very nice to have SSB capability, the regular CB channels, and the NOAA.

I very much agree with you about the nice features on the radio as well. Finally, LOL, I was looking at the same radio myself for SSB features not too long ago.

Cool. I'm I've familiarized myself with the functionality of the unit. My main concern was the pairing of the antenna I chose. Also wanted to know if I need to purchase a stud mount. From the images and description I believe I'll need one. Thanks again for your input @WileECoyote
