One final thought :) This is in jest but it would be awesome if someone did it.

Buy one of those military trailers some of the off road guys have on there, which is essentially a pin style trailer hookup, and the trailer looks like a truck bed.

Install slide in into the trailer.

    BAM! If you do this.....PICS.

Can a 2011/2012 double cab/long bed 4x4 (without the camper....) do the Alpine Loop near Lake City, CO? the only time that I've ever off-roaded was when I rented a jeep there and drove what I think was the Engineer Pass loop from Lake City.

I remember some steep rock sections on some switchbacks and a long bowling ball rock section on a ledge leading up a long, long slope, but not much else.

What is the capability of a Tacoma DC/LB?

That is a very broad question.

These trucks are very capable, but you can't just ask what they can do.

As long as you have 4WD, you will be more limited by ground clearance and the threat of body damage than anything.

I have and I like it. But I don't have the skills or time to build my own. Mine would look like a kid's woodshop project and i want something that I won't hate....

    Plus bathroom/shower.

Roger. I also don't get the OnDemand 4WD description on Toyota's website. Does this have lockers/true 4WD or some complicated differential that acts like AWD? I can't figure it out.

    Again, for 2011/2012 DC/LB.

Thanks for continuing to answer my questions.

It just means that you can shift on-the-fly.

Base/SR5's come with open diffs front and rear. TRD Sport comes with an Auto LSD. TRD Off-Road comes with an electronic rear locker (ideal for off-road).

Waiting for the A-TRAC talk to begin...:spy:

I've thought of this too. But I know from towing a small motorcycle trailer on paved roads that the last thing I EVER want to do is try to back up on a tight switchback with a trailer attached.

If I actually knew what I was doing (vs. endless fantasizing based on little reality), I'd probably go with a trailer that could handle washboards/some potholes that you find at the beginning of an unpaved road, camp at the start of an off road area and leave teh trailer behind for some true exploring.

I just have fantasies of camping where there are no people on some remote trail and having the sky and wind and views all to myself and my family.

This is totally doable - but it will be hard to accommodate everything you want, and everything your family needs. Especially with a baby.

All right; know I'll expose just how clueless I am about this stuff.

Don't go into too much detail to save your fingers, but briefly:

    - What are open differentials?
    - What is Auto LSD (locking [something] differential, I assume - what is it)?
    - I think I get Elec rear locker, the computer decides when it locks? What is the front situation in this setup?

Wikipedia would probably best for this.

Fink, it WILL be hard to accommodate all that I want.

This truck will be the equivalent of a KLR650 cow, not really good at anything but capable of many things...

The link I posted will take you right to the differential section.

It gives a brief breakdown of it at the top, and then if you scroll down to "Traction-Aiding Devices", you should find all the info you need on the various configurations.

One other thing: would like the ability to trailer a motorcycle, so without a huge garage model, not so easy. Although I've seen some small versions out there; Airstream even makes/made one which was over the top expensive.

Ahhh. I thought I had worn out your patience; didn't know there was a link.

That said, I should have searched that myself.

    Thanks!

    Here's one:

On Toyota.com under the "build" your model section, obviously, base model is inherently there, TRD Sport is there, but no TRD Off Road.

Is that not offered for the DC/LB model?

Not yet. But I've been wrestling with the same dilemma. For the moment, I'm going with a bed tent from Kodiak Canvas. We'll see how the wife does with camping (she's never been) and go from there. I'd like to just upgrade to a truck camper straight up, but we'll see how it goes.

The way I figure it, the Tacoma can reasonably carry ~1500 lbs. without real trouble. You'll need the 4 leaf pack at least, and good tires. You won't be able to handle any highly technical terrain, but should be able to get off the beaten path a ways.

But anything you can get for the Tacoma is going to be really rudimentary because of space and weight considerations.

You might consider a tow behind that you can day trip from instead if you have the budget for it, that is.

Haha I know. I found it once. It was called a Commander or something.

Basically a 16' Airstream trailer that cost like $40,000 and sleeps like 2 people.

    Looked amazing tho.
