Why the wink - is one of the packages good enough for off-road? Or can it still be done somehow? I would assume the after market route is pretty expensive.

If it can't be done, is the standard package or the sport package a better off-road option? I need the long bed, otherwise this RV will be like 3 feet long and the wife will never go for it, neither may I!

The wink was just a "letting you know" thing. Off road package is not available in lb for the fact that it is intended for off road use, meaning that it is more capable in the shorter wheel base. But I'm not sure about other ways of building a Tacoma. Maybe you can get a lb sr5 with the locker? :notsure: I know there are people on here that know more on this subject so I'm sure someone will chime in with better info.

That's cool! Man, someone has thought of just about everything. I like that concept, but the wife likely won't - bathroom, shower, fridge, stove, etc I think are the bare minimums she requires. Honestly, I keep pinning this on her, but I've also moved away from true camping and like some creature comforts. I did 40 days on motorcycle from WA to AK to DC and camped most of that time, but I don't ever miss packing a wet tent, setting up and tearing down campsites, going to sleep filthy, extreme heat/cold, etc. I basically like looking at the stars and a campfire; the rest of it I can do without!

    What's a 4 leaf pack - upgraded shock leafs?

The Coyote I'm looking at is 800lbs, 72" wide, 75" long with an expandable loft bed, has a stove, A/C, fridge, little seating area that becomes a bed for the boy, a 2x2 interior toilette/shower area, and water (15 gal fresh and 7 grey with a cassette toilette). Really it's going to function as a tent with a toilette for us, so it SHOULD work. But when i lay the dimensions out in masking tape on the floor it's going to look SMALL and turn the wife off, i know it.

I've thought of towing, but I'd like to tow a small motorcycle trailer along and can't imagine trying to back up on an off road switchback with a trailer. It wouldn't go well.

    Good luck with your purchase.

We'll see. So far the site is educating me.

I was hoping the wink was a "why would you need an off-road package when it's already good enough with out one" thing...

    Thanks!

The Tacoma comes stock with 3 leaf rear springs. They're adequate, but there is a warranty repair to have a 4 leaf pack installed for better load handling. The 2012 TRD Sport edition seems to shipping with the 4 pack on it already, however (mine did, and several others have also reported that, but YMMV).

There are also aftermarket springs you can buy. In addition there are airbags that work pretty well, too.

I have a 1000 lb cabover pop-up camper that I've been using, but I plan to upgrade to a tent trailer or hard sided trailer. I'm looking for a trailer because my pop-up camper doesn't have a toilet or inside shower and it gets a little crowded if you have more than 2 people sleeping in there (I've had as many as 5). For the pop-up I added airbags to keep the rear from sagging, but other than that I didn't do any other upgrades. My truck has averaged anywhere from 13 to 17 mpg with the camper on there. The Tacoma has plenty of power, but you can tell that you have a heavy load when you're driving. The camper has a full size bed, 2 burner propane stove, air conditioning, sofa/bed, and a 3 way refrigerator. I took it on a 2000 mile round trip from San Francisco to Vancouver and it worked out great. I stayed on paved streets so I'm not sure how well the truck/camper would do for serious off-road camping. The previous owner of the camper took it off-roading several times, but he had a Tundra. Good luck with whatever you decide on doing.
