I'm looking for something better than a comealong to pull projects into my driveway, which has about a 15 degree slope. I've used the $20 stamped sheet metal comealongs before for odd projects, and I don't think that they are very safe. I've had the sheet metal housing bend rendering the ratchet useless, the spool axle deform, and even a hook snap.

Are chain pullers any better? I see lots of them on my local craigslist, mostly made by CM. They look like much better quality, have gear reduction, etc. If a chain puller is rated for 3000 lbs, can it actually withstand 3000lbs of tension reliably? The cheap cable comealongs clearly can't. The datasheets for the new CM models don't say "not for lifting" which is stamped all over the cheapo comealongs.
