Many you have bought the metal ones say they have leaked. Just something to keep in mind.

$199 for the spin on adapter... I choked. I'll buy 10 plastic housings and throw them away every oil change before I'll ever pay that much for an adapter. It's probably a very nice product but costs exponentially too much.

Yes a bit pricy, but a very high quality part. You save a few bucks on the filter cost and get the benefit of an anti-drain feature of the spin on filter. I went for it to eliminate the hassle of the canister removal each time and all the associated issues mentioned in this thread.

Well I bought a metal one and it leaked, just a little, but enough to notice. So I went back to the stock plastic, I’m doing all my own changes so I’ll tighten to correct spec.

I use the metal one, not a problem yet. I can see someone not placing the o-ring in the correct location and having problems. I put a fumoto valve on it too :D

Holy shite. $200? That's a lot of oil changes before it pays for itself, convenience included...

Doesn't make sense to me either. Oil change is about once a year maybe every 8mo and the stock one isn't a lot of work, I don't get it.

What keeps it from spinning off while removing the spin on filter?

I asked Baxter that same question. The adapter has 2 o-rings and it get torqued to 25 ft lbs. A spin-on filter gets hand tightened only. I never had a problem with mine but I am careful with the tightening of the filter and keep one hand on the adapter when I remove the spin-on.

Looks like I’m not the only person to have this issue…

Mine was on so tight I couldn’t even get the drain plug out, it was obvious they used that to screw on the canister. I eventually got the canister off after a while of fighting with it using the biggest breaker bar I have. I’m still shocked nothing broke in the process. It was well beyond the torque spec of 20 ft lbs for the canister and 10 ft lbs for the drain plug… more like 100+

Getting the drain plug out of the canister was another battle.

I don’t think I’ll be taking mine to the dealer again after this disaster.

There is no benefit to the anti drain feature of the spin on oil filter when the open end of the filter is at the top.

The anti drainback feature is a benefit if the filter is mounted sideways or open end down.

As positioned on the Tacoma, the stock cartridge filter doesn’t drain out until you remove the drain plug and then insert the drain tube at the bottom of the cartridge.
So, when starting the vehicle, if you want to pre-fill an oil filter when doing an oil change, with either spin-on or cartridge filter, it can always have oil contained within.

    Just sayin.

I haven’t changed the oil on my Taco yet, I still have 1 more free service but this happened to my T4R. The dealership over-tightened the filter and it was obvious because the filter has a marking to line up when screwing it back in.

This is gonna sound weird cause I thought the same when I heard it but get a piece of paper and stuff it in the adapter then press it over the filter. It will give it a sturdy grip strong enough to get it going.

Opinions are like a certain opening in one's butt. Everyone has one. For me the adapter has made oil changes easier and after 200K will pay for itself. So keep your cartridge if you wish, I was just giving others on this forum an optional way.

How low do this cause the spin on filter to hang? Do you have to remove the skid plate? I would love to run one of these with a reusable oil filter.

that's my fear, breaking it. my last oil change i did it was on there very tight and the amount of muscle to get it off did not feel right. plus once you get it to turn then it feels like it was cross-threaded, does not just spin easy. all one needs it to crack it and turn a DIY oil change into a total goat rope. maybe a spare plastic housing on hand is a good idea. my 2008 4.0 was so easy compared to the 3rd gens.

i just herd this saying for the first time today on a TV show. "Opinions are like an ass hole, everyone has one and they all stink except mine"
